I got a price quote from WORKs-need advice

I took my Evo to works and they were awesome. Now that I have the brz They quoted me $99 for header install and 350 for dyno tune plus a flash that I want. It seems like the dyno tune does not include the flash from what I understand so that will be another 599 for an ecutek license. Is this a bit steep? Anyone else in NorCal have experience with taking their twin here?

How do you feel about their prices? I can tell you I feel reluctant paying $80 for an oil change when I can do it myself for $60. On the other hand, a shop tells me an alignment will cost $200+ and I tell them give me more. Typically, if something don't feel right, then maybe it isn't right. That just may be me. I'll never say what you paid for a mod is ridiculous because somethings, we just can't attain from our personal garages and experiences.

You can get an OpenFlash or a Tactrix cable and save lots of money on the tune. Since Vish has released ROMs, EcuTek is now officially a ripoff if you're not going FI.

Any decent shop can install headers. New gaskets are recommended. That install price is reasonable if they're close by. I wouldn't drive far for them.

I assume your car is NA... I'd skip the actual dyno tune and go for a canned tune. The OFT's off the shelf stage 2 tunes do a pretty good job already. There's also a number of vendors who offer canned EcuTek tunes with e-tuning. You'll need to decide which vendor and which platform to choose, depending on what your end goal is for the car.

However, if you're trying to squeeze out the last drop of horsepower from the engine, by all means, do the dyno tune. I can't comment on Works' tuning abilities through, as I have no experience with them. Others may be able to comment here.

I've heard mixed things about FW Motorsports http://www.fw-motorsports.com/

I've sent a couple of feelers through their contact form (will need installing my FT86SF catted header when it comes in) but they apparently don't monitor their inbox.

Why do you need a dyno tune? What's wrong with an "off the shelf" tune?

I don't know. That's what they offered and they aren't replying to clarify options offered

To be clear, guys, any auto shop can install headers. It's shadetree mechanic type work that gets stupid easy with a lift. Do not stress or pay a premium.

Do you think there's a chance we'd get turned down by some because we're replacing a perfectly functional cat? I know it's not allowed here in Cali...

No performance shop should. And in regards to the tune the OFT maps should be sufficient unless you want every last drop of power. I would say give it a try on the map first before locking down a protune.

I wouldn't say any, but definitely any competent shop should be able to do it. there are some shoddy shops out there and I don't know how they are still in business
