Even the most talented driver cannot defy physics. Let's think logically for one second. Randy Pobst does 1:51 at Laguna Seca on a stock BRZ. The time differential between a lap at Laguna and Thunderhill is about 20 seconds, which means Randy runs about 2:11 at Thill. No magical driver can be 7 seconds faster than Randy in the same car. I'm done beating this dead horse until the impossible happens.

I've come to realize that some Solo drivers have more track experience and being timed is up their alley.
If that is the case, then they should move up to point-by. Placing timers in with solo drivers for a 'competition' is just asking for trouble. Solo group is already sketchy enough as it is. If they want to run in the program, they need to be signed off for point-by at the minimum.

I ran a 2:18 at Thunderhill bone stock....so I would say the goal time at Thunderhill for a pure stock car is 2:13 over the top... I run 2:02's in my racer that is 70lbs lighter with 310hp on slicks that pull peaks of 1.9g and constant 1.5g...my stock FRS struggled at 1.15g....
I was typing up my reply when you posted this. It's nice to have another voice of reason chime in.

Agreed. I'm just glad that NCRC is willing to review these drivers and clear them to move on to the next group.

Please welcome MANN Engineering (of Santa Clara) to help provide even more generous assistance to our 86Cup participants. Conveniently located in Santa Clara, CA, they house an impressive collection of necessary tools and equipment to satisfy all of your cars' needs, including multiple lifts, a Maha Chassis Dyno, and Bosch alignment machines just to name a few. They provide an assortment of services for your FR-S/BRZ from an oil change, tech inspections to packaged performance upgrades that can elevate your experience to the next level. MANN Engineering's experience, knowledge, and facility also receives frequent visits from William Knose (of Delicious Tuning) to tune clients' cars. Here's a list of goodies you can expect from Mann Engineering:
* 5% off performance parts from our advertised Mann Engineering Web Price. This excludes any packages that we currently offer.
* 10% off labor/installation/diagnostic rates, such as alignment, vehicle inspection, etc.
* Discounts are offered to those who participate in 3 or more events for the 2014 NorCal 86Cup series.

getting the car ready for the inaugural event this Sat Mar 22...

swapped in the race pads, installed SS brake lines, and bled the brakes today.

Who else plans on coming out, whether to drive or to watch.

I agree with your assessment 1,000,000% lets be CLEAR.....the FT86 Cup is NOT A RACE...not even close....it IS a time trial....................................

There is a HUGE difference....most of the Ft86 owners are new to driving on a big track...it is worlds different than autox or drifting or spirited street driving (which is illegal)

In my opinion running a time trial is worlds different than wheel to wheel RACING... Lets be perfectly clear....most time trials are conducted during normal DE sessions (typically the highest level, "open" or whatever they call it)....true all out time trials consist of a group warm up period then everyone lines up in the hot pits and get sent out for 2 hot laps with almost zero traffic.....cars are sent out at intervals to allow this...

Ft86 is ran the DE way (meaning during normal DE sessions)....so if you are on a hot lap and a slower driver gets in your way, you are REQUIRED to follow the rules of your run group....if you make an aggressive move and there is an incident...not only are you jeopardizing your lap, you car, the other guys car....you are jeopardizing the future of the Ft86 cup... I cannot be more clear on this.

We are running with NCRC this weekend. The passing rules are very clear for every group. If the corner workers see you violating the rules they will black flag you....and they rarely miss anything. Then you can explain why you are "racing" in a drivers education class to a race official....trust me this is NOT a conversation you want to have.

The moral of my long winding story....don't worry about what you "think" your car can do...or why this or that car passed you since yours is SO much better.... Drive within YOUR limits...since if you exceed your limits the consequences are NEVER worth it.

agreed with icemang, but hope to still see you come out, even if it's in the S2000... and keep offering ridealongs and tips.

It's been a long time coming since I've been on THill. Hope much has not changed since being there on 2 wheels, chasing the shade from a side of a truck or from an EZ-Up because they didn't have a clubhouse nor covered parking. I'm not expecting much but to have a good time, get some track miles, and a change of pace from the somewhat mundane use of the car.

The 86Cup, in spirited fashion, and my knack of "knowing" IS a time trial of going around a track. Like I've done in my other hobbies, knowing what and how I personally did suffices my curiosity of "is it worth it". This car, like my previous ones I've tracked, fulfills that adage of "been there done that, got the shirt". So I hope the 86Cup will answer some of own questions - IT IS a time trial by nature, progression is the key. And we've acquired some helpful support from CSG, LPI Racing, and Mann Engineering. Do use them for your cars' needs and it should not hurt to mention 86Drive or 86Cup.

Be a spectator or a participant, be there to support this platform. I hope the folks like orthojoe, icemang17, ayjay, rehabJeff can afford to make new friends driving up in their BRZ/FR-S.

Excellent comment. For various reasons, I won't be tracking my BRZ much this year. I will, however, be doing a fair amount of track days. Always happy to meet new people and share experiences. I myself will be down at Laguna tomorrow. Have fun this weekend, be safe, and keep the shiny side UP!

What do I need to do to get into the track and hang out with you guys? Bribe the guards? Hop a fence or two?

Tell them at the gate you're there to spectate.

Or someone can hide you in the trunk.

Have you noticed much of a difference with the SS brake lines? I had them on the BRZ, but didn't notice a difference til I put on race pads.. now all I have on the WRX is race pads and am contemplating whether the lines are even worth it.

On a track day like this, anyone can enter for free. All you have to do is sign in at the front gate.
