You're still under bumper to bumper, not to mention the powertrain warranty. And it absolutely transfers, so you'll be fine regardless the problem. With the oil level normal though it seems to be ignition/injection related. It sucks with it being your new car and all, but the dealer will take care of it.

If you have any kind of mods I suggest you take them off before bringing it to the dealer
I'm in Canada so there's no laws to ensure what you mod had to directly have caused the problem before they can void your warranty, but they will try to give you loads of BS (not the dealer, but TOYOTA). Basically, I had a very similar problem, albeit my car would start and not turn itself off, but had the same knocking sound (ends up the rod bearings had melted/broken off). Scion/Toyota's initial reply was, "You modded your car, and just from looking at it, it's obvious that your grippier tires, lip kit and bucket seat caused the engine failure, sorry bro!" (the Canadian Scion rules are, Any Mods can void Any Part of your warranty) (which technically means you can be voided your warranty for putting on snow tires haha) they later bargained that they would take apart the engine and look at it, if it was indeed caused by me, then I would have to pay for the take apart and what ever else fix costs. I agreed and obviously, they fixed everything on their dime since it was not something caused by my "massive amounts of mods" (lol) But... moral of the story, don't even give them anything to point their finger at if possible. |

Good luck man and sorry this had to sour the new car experience.
Sounds like a mechanical issue with the engine. Keep us updated! |

Did you check oil? Severe mechanical issue like lower end you should see metal in the oil. Regardless that sounds like a rebuild.

Dezoris - I did check the oil that night, it looked okay no metal shavings. About 3/4 on the dipstick.
Thanks everyone for the wishes and support. I'm currently at the dealer and my and others suspicions were true it is a rod knocking. Now the bad part the dealer states since it was in a front end accident at one time they are stating that this played into the premature engine failure. They noted too that since antifreeze didn't look factory (probably topped / replaced at some point) and that the oil change change used non Toyota oil and a AC Delco filter (dealer I got from was GM) they are attributing that as well. They noted the different coolant makes them suspect it got low on coolant from the accident while ultimately lead to overheating and in the end lead to the failure of the rod leading to the knocking. Now the good news is that the dealer I purchased it from will take care of the bill on replacing with a used motor, the used motor us being sourced by my Toyota dealer and will only have 200 miles on it. Problem here is that it will only have a 90 day warranty and not fall under the power train warranty which according to my records I have 3 and a half years and 40,000 miles left. It won't effect the rest of my power train Toyota and the dealer said but it would of course effect my engine since it's being replaced as a whole (part replacement). They even noted a new motor from Toyota would only carry a 1 year warranty and not tie back into the power train warranty. Advise, should I fight it? I worry with engine issues on the forums having a non warrantied engine in the future years. (Sorry sounds rushed in the dealer with my iPad posting) |

I thought I noted the accident in my first post, must have been so worried I rushed without mentioning. It had have a front collision at 15,000 miles which did minimal damage, repaired by State Farm from last owner and cleared inspections so.

If it's being replaced with a genuine Toyota part supplied by Toyota, they should honor the continued warranty. Under normal circumstances, if I have a motor replaced under warranty, they can't say that the new motor will have a "limited warranty" separate from the original powertrain warranty. I would at least go to a lawyer that does free consultations before you sign anything. That sounds like BS to me.

I'm home now from work and have a few minutes to update (from the ipad ignore some punctuation).
The service manager at Toyota / Scion dealer the car was originally purchased from reached out and gave me some good info on this particular car and it's engine issues from the get go that has had multiple visits from a FTS inspection rep from Toyota. He let me know he would reach out to the service manager here at the Toyota / Scion dealer in Jackson to help out on this. I later talked with the local service manager here in Jackson at Toyota / Scion and he let me know that the service advisor miscommunication the information on the warranty and motor replacement. The service manager attempted to follow the protocol with Toyota on getting an FTS inspection rep from Toyota to come look at the particular engine but due to the wreck information, wrong coolant, and low oil when it came in they (Toyota) denied the request to the dealer. Now on replacing the engine with a replacement engine with the 200 miles will I fact reinstate the factory warranty on the powertrain for the engine for the remaining 3 and 1/2 years or 40,000 more miles (it goes off odometer miles). He noted that currently all powertrain warranty is still effective except the motor but with the replacement motor being sourced, installed, and done by a Toyota / Scion dealer Toyota will let them re-instate the powertrain warranty on the engine itself. So in the end I will have powertrain warranty unaffected across the board and re-instated after the work is done by Toyota and I'm getting a practical new engine as well. I really want to give props for the Chevrolet dealer Tom Bannen Chevrolet (now Sierra Chevrolet) for stepping up on this and paying for the engine replacement to make it right and to get my car completely re-instated for its power train warranty. I'll keep you guys posted but seems like a lot has happened from Friday picking it up through today working all this out. |
