I suspect the problem is with your steering angle sensor, not the roll connector (AKA clockspring). See similar discussion in this thread.

Subaru's drawing for 2014 BRZ.

Subaru's drawing for 2014 BRZ.

Read the web link, any idea to where the sensor is. This is my first aftermarket steering wheel install I've done myself so I'm not familiar with its components.

The parts diagram shows the roll connector (98261), closest to the driver. You see part of that when you open up the wheel (kylefrs' 2nd picture in post #1 -- the black plastic part with the vacant harness sockets).

On the diagram, the steering angle sensor (27582) is in front of that (closer to front of car).

In WRX/STi, body of the combination switch sits in front of that (closest to front of car). The left and right stalks attach to that base.

All of those parts have the large round hole in the middle through which the steering column runs.

The BRZ and FR-S diagram shows that the left stalk includes the main body portion of the combination switch assembly (with the large hole). But I can't tell from the diagram whether that fits between the roll connector and steering angle sensor, or in front of everything (nearest to the front of the car) like in WRX/STi.

In any case, the problem is that the SAS needs to be recalibrated. There should be a procedure in the shop manual detailing that.

You might be better off finding a service tech who's familiar with that (but try to avoid someone who will be too quick to say you need to replace your SAS).

The PO broke the clockspring in my car so here is what Ilearned while trouble shooting it.

The steering angle sensor attaches to the clockspring(spiral cable as Toyota calls it). They snap together and the steering anglesensor interfaces with the clockspring in a way that they turn together. The whileassembly snaps into the steering column. The steering wheel (or hub in yourcase) interfaces with the airbag sockets turning the assembly.

If the clockspring breaks there will be numerous Airbag and ABS related DTC codes. Steering anglesensor will trigger ABS and slip. In my case C1231 Steering angle sensormalfunction.

The clockspring will sit with the airbag sockets at the 12 o’clockposition with the orange gear at the left showing though the window. It is notas fragile as people make it out to be but it will definitely break if turnedtoo far or assembled too far out of position, which will ultimately force it toturn too far. Assuming it hasn’t been turned too far it’s really pretty easy toassemble, the important part is the wheel is put on straight with the wheelsstraight.

The steering angle sensor is made up of 1 big gear, thatinterfaces with the clockspring, which turns two smaller gears with magnetsthat are monitored by sensors. There is nothing to break, unlike theclockspring. It is unclear to me if there is a true mechanical zero point tothe Steering angle sensor or if the ECU take whatever point the sensors are atand makes that “zero”. I’m hoping it’s the latter as I took mine apart thinkingit was already broken.

At this point my assumption is that once the steering anglesensor is calibrated all will be right. Worst case I’ll have to order a newsteering angle sensor that is at mechanical zero. Calibration can be done atthe dealer or through techstream software.

*Edit/update: In my case I needed to replace the Steering angle senor. Once replaced I calibrated with techstream (zero point calibration) and my error went away.

Where did you get that red wiring harness? My car only has one blue wire.

I'll never understand the scaremongering surrounding not having an airbag, my plymonth barracuda didn't have any, my Celica XX didn't have any and neither did my Celica ST185, yet I still drove those without a worry.

Sure it's true that even if you're a careful driver there's nothing stopping someone else hitting you, but at the same time, that's assuming that you get hit head on, and there's nothing stopping that driver being in an SUV, Van, Truck or any other heavy load vehicle, and in that case an airbag isn't going to do a thing.

If you want a wheel without an airbag get one, going to make very little difference in the long run.

Guys I just got my steering wheel replaced and now I'm stuck with a wheel that's not centered even though I took the precaution. The issue is, with the teeth at the end of the wheel, if I shift it one left it's to much off on the right side and if I shift it right it's too much left. What should be touched to directly fix this? I don't think an alignment to turn the front wheels further one direction is right... It needs to be touched somewhere before getting to the power steering at least I guess? Calling to experts!
