Hawk

Mr Hawk,
Can you summarize how you discovered your oil over filled, and any damages as a result?

Jamie

In my opinion you must take back your vehicle to them and hold them responsibility

I will do that. I like the idea of having a professional 3rd party. Then the dealership must own up to there mistake.

Did you read this part of your manual?
The frothing caused by crank thrash can obstruct the PCV system leading to excessive crankcase pressure and blown seals.

Too much oil is a very serious situation. Frustrating because the dipstick is certainly accurate enough to inform you that you have put enough oil in. There is a misconception perpetuated from a time when engines routinely used oil that low oil on the dipstick indicated neglect or oil burning. Nowadays that litre (or quart) of oil represented by the marks on the dipstick is more than enough safety margin. Engines are designed to run perfectly and indefinitely with the oil at the LO mark. Never run them with oil above the MAX mark.

The owners manual description of use of the dipstick isn't helpful in my experience. Following this procedure pretty much guarantees overfilling. The lesser Impreza has a low oil level float switch that illuminates a low oil level warning light. Does our car?

And very good advice.

In my local jurisdiction we also have a government agency who will assist customers with getting service shops to correct their mistakes by financial compensation, useful after the warranty expires.

The relationship between a dealer and the manufacturer is one of dependent contractor. Complaining to Toyota or Subaru first and then the dealership helps you, other customers and the manufacturer correct weak or dishonest dealers.

Good dealers welcome these techniques because many times they are the ones caught between the customer and the manufacturer, obviously not where workmanship is the main issue.

All manufacturers want their dealers kept in line, improved preferably. Effective customer complaint is a powerful tool.

No signs of damages 3,000 miles later.

The day after taking the car to the dealership, I woke up to a pool of oil in the garage.

The mechanic at the dealership had the pleasure of not only overfilling the engine, but also of adding a second gasket. Both gaskets were bent from over-torquing.

My dealer did the same thing to me on my 1st oil change. Almost an inch overfilled. I took it back immediately and asked them to remove the extra oil.

A little bit over is no big deal, also, this car is VERY sensitive to the angle it sits at when taking measurements, so make sure it's dead-level, and always check it the same way every time.
The dipstick on our cars enters the oil at an angle, so changes in the oil level show up on the dipstick as more than the actual change, so if the oil is 1/8" over, it'll show 1/4" over on the stick.

There's also the extra oil on the dipstick above the marks that makes it harder to read.

One thing I read here was to take some fine emery paper, and sand the dipstick from the tip to an inch or so above the full mark. This makes the oil stick to the dipstick and helps show the actual oil level much better.

That's just saying the manual is wrong... but ok. More power to you.

No idea about the light.
