Is there significantly more turbo lag with a rear mounted system?

If I had to guess, I would say it only makes sense that the longer travel time would add lag, but what do I know. That is what makes sense logically though. |

A 3" pipe running 6' piping is around 510ci. For a 2" pipe to take up the same volume, it would take about 13.5'. So I can see some sound reasoning here to their claims. The charge pipe length probably has little to do with decreasing transient response. On the other hand, the exhaust is very interesting. Stock exhaust is used in their kit. All factory cats and piping are used. The turbo is so far away from the exhaust ports that the velocity of the exhaust gasses have slowed down and cooled off before entering the turbo. A lot of that energy used to spool the turbo is lost. On the flip-side, the exhaust after the turbo is non-existent. Therefore, backpressure through mufflers or exhaust bends is negated. In testing, I've seen the results of running an open downpipe vs full exhaust and the former really helps to spool the turbo up! Overall, I have faith the kit is good. But I told my wife I'd pay the car off before modding heavily. 6k is pretty heavy lol. Hopefully someone gets this kit and gives their impressions of how well it works. |

Review on the STS turbo
I went there just the other week and went on a ride along in their BRZ. I was quite surprised! First off the sound was phenomenal - unlike anything I have ever heard before. The power they were pushing was right around 300RWHP on 7psi, which is right in line with most other base kits out there. The price was a little high (I am paying right around 6K for my kit W/O inter-cooler but I got the bigger turbo housing and misc upgraded parts). Everything under the car fit way better then the stock muffler - I am still thinking about welding on a shroud or something to protect the turbo from rocks n stuff but also in my mind is that it will be fine due to the thick powder coating they do. Some people are worried about hitting or scraping the turbo on road hazards but some thing to think about is that the turbo basically sits right next to the rear axle so speed bumps will push the tires/axle up and in turn the turbo with it. Another thing is the fact that STS' BRZ is still rolling down the road fine with 10K miles and no under belly scraps even tho they lowered theirs with coils about 2'-3'. All in all I thought it was a good kit, maybe, not worth the money but I could not resist the noise it made and the fact that its super easy to swap it back to stock and cash in the warranty if a factory defect presents itself later on (which these cars are known to have).
They are building the pipes n such for my kit but I will be doing the install. I will GoPro the install and place it on youtube with a verbal pros n cons of the performance/install/looks of the kit. |

You could take a few measurments and contact FT86SpeedFactory and see if the Driveway Labs Rear Diffuser will fit.

That is a good idea but with the horror stories of people getting rear mounts cut off with a hack saw brings more light to getting something with more strength value. Then I have to think about cooling. One of the major reasons of a rear mount is to keep it cool with outside air temps and enclosing it with a diffuser or metal cage might make it build heat instead of disperse it. The other thing I am looking into the metal cage is to protect it when I air out my suspension. Lot to think about but I will wait for when the kit gets in and installed.

As for the charge pipe, yes you want to keep that cool.

Anyone know when this will actually be CARB certified? Seems to be taking forever.
