People can do whatever they want to their cars, I agree. That's the beauty of living in a relatively "free" society. If someone likes it, and it's their car, they shouldn't give a shit if others don't.

However, that doesn't shield those people from the perception of others. If I see a mid 90's Eclipse, non-turbo model, with a body kit and big wing, I am not alone in my opinion of that being rice.

I'm of the opinion that our cars look beautiful in stock form. The only cosmetics that I would personally add would be aero, which would get used for occassional track days. That doesn't mean that I think that someone who puts on some aftermarket tail lights is a ricer. But if I see a Rocket Bunny kit on your car and you have 0 performance mods, I'm going to think you're a ricer. That's my perception. Others may feel the same, others may not.

If anyone is offended by this, then maybe they need to re-evaluate how much they care about the perception of others before going overboard on race inspired cosmetic enhancements.

I've noticed a trend in this topic. When there is a GT wing on display the 1st question regarding it's rice status is: does it see the track?

this question is irrelevant. If I had a GT wing on my car on I spent 10% of its driving on the track and the other commuting and etc, then 90% of the time people seeing me would be all "RICCE RICER CIRIEICR" not even knowing that it was for the use of the occasional track day.

the term rice is just an emotion you feel when you look at the car. it doesn't have a set-in-stone definition. or else there would be a "is it rice?" handbook that would be a full length novel considering the rules and regulations and exceptions to whether a mod is ricey.

When I was mentioning whether a wing was rice or not based on track use, I was moreso talking about the driver.

A big wing is a rice mod on a street car. A big wing is useful on a track car. If I see a big wing on a street car, I tend to assume that the driver is a ricer.

I think of a ricer the same way I think of a poser. Basically, someone who just wants to look cool. Someone trying to be flashy hoping it will attract some attention. Usually pubescent boys hoping it will get female attention and/or make other pubescent boys jealous.

However, if the driver also tracks their car, then they aren't actually a ricer at all. The big wing is still a rice mod on a street car and I'll assume that the driver is a ricer. But if I later find out that the car is track driven, my opinion of that person will change.

What makes the whole thing confusing is that there are those who daily drive and track the same car. Fortunately, the amount of people in the real world that actually do this is incredibly small, so the majority of the time, seeing a big wing on a street car is chicken fried rice.

So wait a second...a car is rice and a driver is ricer based on the location of the car? This is getting complicated. Do we have to start following people around to see if they go to a track before making a judgement call on them?

No. You make your own judgment call. There is nothing complicated about it. If I see a car on the street with a big wing, I'm going to think rice. If you see a big wing on a street car, maybe you don't. If I see a guy on the street with saggy pants, a big silver necklace, and a gold grill in his mouth, I might think he's a drug dealer, you may think he's a musical artist.

It's called PERCEPTION, which is all "rice" is about. If everyone in our society believed extravagant body kits on cars to be the norm, we wouldn't be having this conversation at all.

I stated my opinion regarding big wings on street cars. Some people will feel the same, and others won't. My opinion is liable to change depending on whether that person has the wing just for show, or if they actually use it for performance (on the track). My perception. Does this mean everyone feels the same as I do? No.

FYI, this debate only started as a response to someone who called me out on an old post I made. I'm done explaining myself. Have fun kiddos.

The people who think big wings on "daily drivers" are ok are ricers plain and simple. If any one is offended by that they are a ricer. Period!

I would say this is true. However I DD and track once a month plus some auto x so should I put one on I wouldn't feel like a ricer. Just my opinion.

Eh, I know a lot of guys who daily drive their track cars that have wings. They are some of the best time attack drivers I know. Motorsports shouldn't be reserved for the rich only who can afford dedicated cars.

arguing semantics about casual terms that are ill defined isnt going to get you anywhere. you dont get to correct someones opinion and thats all there is regarding these terms.
