From what I've read, if you have a cover with a tight fit AND gust straps, you should be able to use it outside in the weather (provided you get the right type of material for your climate and also put it on after a wash).

I'll know next spring as I'm sitting the FR-S in my driveway covered with gust straps.

If you go this route, I would hand wax/detail the car before putting the cover on, then have a good detail shop lined up for Spring to take any scratches out of the car before you start driving around.

Or better yet:

Get some cheap painter's plastic rolls (at most $20) and cover up the car prior to using a car cover.

I swear by 'Noah' covers by Covercraft for outside storage, cut specifically for the car. They fit like a glove and protect beautifully. I remove (unscrew) the antenna before covering. I always have a good coat of wax on the car and I wipe down all contact areas with detailer before installing. I also use gust guards front and rear. Been doing this for years with several different cars and I've never had a scratch or a swirl.

BTW, this cover is very thick and takes up a lot of room when rolled up so it's not really practical for day-to-day use. But for longer term outside storage it's the best I've found for a decent price.

My Mustang has gone through hurricanes Irene and Sandy as well as several blizzards with a custom fit Noah cover and still wins first place trophies at MCA judged events where paint condition is a major consideration. If you're getting scratches or swirls: (a) You don't have the right cover for its intended use or (b) the car (or cover) was dirty when the cover was installed or (c) the cover doesn't fit properly. It's that simple.

Check out www.autochic.com I have seen one of their covers on a Porsche Carrera R in Florida and it fits tight, like a glove. I think it's around $300 for a top of the line fabric for a BRZ.

Covercraft makes great covers. Their Dustop for strictly indoors is awesome, and for universal indoor and outdoor and great protection their Evolution for this car also would be choice.
