![]() It is an older car so almost every year I've had to replace some parts on it (just got done replacing the brake rotors, pads, fluid, and wheel bearings). But it's still cheaper than paying new car payments. I think the biggest problem with the DSM's is that most people put bigger turbos on them and modify them to heck which obviously results in reliability issues. Mine has never overheated with the stock turbo and I've driven it hard many times. Although my turbo did eventually blow out last year (which I replaced with another new stock Garrett turbo). I will probably sell it when the MY2015 FR-S's come out if you're interested. I don't think I can justify having 2 cars and I think I'm ready for something new. But we'll see...

I understand what some of you are saying about luxury, etc. in this car. And the rattles to some extent add to the car's character, adding to the ''no compromise'' philosophy. However, the mechanical problems are harder to ignore or live with... The car has shut-down on me while driving when I pressed-in the clutch. I mean that's just dangerous.. We'll see I guess, if things don't get significantly better, I certainly won't keep the car beyond warranty.

You mean you stalled, or it shut down before you lifted the pedal?

I mean it shut down by itself. Was approaching a stop, clutched in, stopped, put it in first, declutched, and nothing, the car was off.
I took it in they said it could be related to the crickets, changed the HPFP, crickets came back after a couple days. The car has not stalled again, but idle drops till the cars almost dies then goes back up.. I think it's just a matter of luck that it hasn't stalled since. |

SCHARGED: It's obvious that you have a negative opinion of the car. Doesn't matter what anyone here says. Obviously we all love the car and are defending it. At this point ... you should get the dealer to fix the problems and move on. No big deal. Part of life. But ... as you will soon find out. Your next car will not be flawless. No car is. Good luck.

First step is to take it to your dealer / service department. See what they can fix and then take it from there. I have been guilty of complaining about issues without actually asking anyone to see if they can be fixed. That being said, this car is not a Corolla where they have continually refined an existing model / platform, it is all new. Issues will be worked out, but, concerns need to be brought to the dealers so they can be adequately addressed. As long as we remain silent, all will be assumed as good. All that being said, I will be seeing if some of my nagging issues can be resolved at my next service appointment. I am definitely not giving up on a car that I have soooooo much fun driving.

I don't think its right to defend a car and say mine doesn't do that so its not a big deal. I think as owners we should support people with issues and help them try to get their issues resolved. It helps create a better car and community.
However, rattles, noises, crickets, etc... seriously? If that is your only problem I don't know what to tell you except you bought the wrong car. The only issues that should be a concern are the DI and the old CEL bad idle issue. I believe all the CEL issues only affected early cars and have been cleared up by the later ecu flashes. The only remaining issue with the DI should only affect early cars with 2012 build dates. The newest ecu flash fixes it possibly fixes the DI issue, but they aren't willing to give the flash to anyone due to no TSB. |

I've never owned a car without quirks (aka: things you come to love or hate about it).
Heck one of my favorite cars in the world is the 2nd Gen CRX si and that thing is real shitbox but I love the hell out of it and every time I see a clean one on the road I think about making the guy an offer. In my Hondas (one that weren't raced or modified) I've had water leaks, broken engine mounts, seat mounting hardware fail (seriously), dropped a valve, lost a pilot bearing, countless bad distributors/ignitors/coils, and so on and so forth. Even my bone stock S2000 broke it's own windshield when I was thrashing it on a mountain pass. It wasn't without it's quirks either... Front bumper paint was peeling after 30k miles, soft top was wearing a hole in it after 45k miles, etc etc. My girlfriend's Toyota Matrix only has 60k on it and it and we already had to replace the radiator. I was really surprised by that. And don't get me started on the old Alfa Romeo's my dad had while I was growing up.. Holy sheeze. I really learned how to cuss watching my dad work on Alfas. So yeah... if you're unwilling or unable to fix the rear deck popping and the crickets are too much to tolerate then this definitely is not the car for you. Oh how I would love the crickets to be gone but... cest la vie.

What AC issues are there? I haven't really heard of anyone having AC issues. In the end it really depends on how much you let these little things bother you. I'm assuming you are a little OCD with your car and want to fix this and that as soon as you discover them and that's great but this car is definitely not for you then since various rattles will almost always be a problem and I don't believe the crickets will ever really go away. =/ Best of luck.

I really dan't believe how many of you seem to say that my expectations are too high.. I've had other new cars before, and none with as many ''little'' things as my FR-S... rattles and all, as I said before, not a big deal.. But I really don't think it's too much to expect that my brand new car doesn't turn it self off when I drive it.
For the record, the car has not stalled again, but idle is still rough. And I understand what some of you are saying about the crickets, that it doesn't affect performance and whatnot, but it does affect the overal driving experience IMHO... I mean really, sounding like an old tempo with a squeeky belt doesn't screem sports car experience... |
