Exactly how misleading are you trying to be with this post? MSRP for the base Viper (current generation) has never been above $100k. It's true that the base price was recently lowered about $5000, but what you're doing above is comparing the base model on sale NOW with the upper level GTS model, which was still nowhere near $130k. And a quick search on Cars.com shows that the cheapest Viper within 500 miles of me is a 2013 base model with 2600 miles for $75,000. New that car was maybe $90k. In fact there are a few very lightly used 2013 GTS models on sale now for $130k+, so those have actually increased in value. Your depreciation argument is void. It's all invalid anyway, as the ACR model, much like the 911 GT3s, has very little depreciation.

It's okay to state you don't like the car, but you don't have to be dishonest to back up your opinion.

Dodge Viper reportedly axed over side curtain airbags

Countless fans are mourning the impending death of the Dodge Viper but a new report shedding light on why it's being sent to the automotive graveyard in the first place.

Citing a source "intimately familiar with FCA’s plans," Motor Trend is reporting the Viper isn't being axed over slow sales. Instead, the publication says the model cannot comply with federal safety standard FMVSS #226 which requires vehicles to be equipped with side curtain airbags. As the source explained, adding side curtain airbags would significantly reduce the vehicle's limited amount of headroom.

While it sounds odd that Chrysler wouldn't have factored in upcoming safety regulations when the Viper was being designed, it's far from the first model to disappear due to problems meeting safety regulations.

Of course, the Viper's disappearance could be short lived as FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has said "Given the architectural development within the brand, there is a possibility that a new version of the Viper may surface." Nothing has been decided but FCA is reporting considering an all-new Viper based on the same platform that underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Unfortunately, even if the Viper survives it will likely eschew a V10 engine.

For Corvette and Dodge Viper owners looking for the best possible performance, aftermarket forced induction systems are generally the best way to go. However, some drivers go down a different road, like this fifth-gen Viper owner.

Rather than having the massive V10 engine turbocharged or supercharged, the owner has simply had the heads and camshafts upgraded and during a recent outing, set a new world record for an all-motor fifth-gen Viper with a 9.95 second quarter mile at 225 km/h (140 mph).

While no power details about this particular Viper are known, the car typically pumps out 640 hp at 6,150 rpm and 600 lb-ft of torque at 4,950 rpm. In this case, with new heads, camshafts and an ECU tune, that horsepower figure is likely close to the 700 hp mark.

Any ¼ mile time in the 10-second range for a road car is impressive but with a high 9-second run, this Viper isn't far off the current fleet of European hybrid hypercars, despite being down on power and using a traditional six-speed manual transmission.

Aside from the Viper turning 25, this also happens to be its final year of production, making Dodge's announcement somewhat bittersweet.

The limited-edition models come with exclusive content to commemorate the final year of production, as well as a serialized instrument panel badge that can also be customized with the client's name.

Order books open on June 24th as Viper fans and enthusiasts with sufficient funds will be able to order their very own special snake in one of five special edition configurations.

In no particular order, we'll start with the Viper 1:28 Edition ACR which pays tribute to the current model's single lap record at Laguna Seca. It was set back in October 2015 by Randy Pobst, behind the wheel of a 2016 Viper ACR. In terms of looks, it features a black exterior with red ACR stripes, carbon ceramic brakes, 1:28 Edition sill decals and red ACR accent stitching inside the cabin.

Dodge will be building 28 units under this configuration for the 2017 model year.

Next up is the Viper GTS-R Commemorative Edition ACR, which pays tribute to an iconic Viper paint scheme instead of a lap record. The paint scheme in question is the same white & blue combo found on the 1998 Viper GTS-R GT2 Championship Edition. It's made out of a Pearl White exterior with Blue Pearl GTS stripes, the same extreme aero package as 1:28 Edition, same red interior stitching and same carbon ceramic brakes, but adds the Exterior Carbon Package, unique red Stryker badge decal, USA flag B-pillar decals and GTS-R exterior sill decals. No fewer than 100 units will be built.

The Viper VoooDoo II Edition ACR (yes five 'O's' in total) is modeled after the original 2010 VooDoo Edition car and comes with a predominantly black exterior, a graphite metallic ACR driver's stripe with red tracer outline, extreme aero pack & carbon ceramic brakes, VoooDoo II exterior sill decals, silver accent stitching for the interior and custom badging. Since Dodge built 31 units of the original and properly-spelled 2010 VooDoo Viper ACR, they'll be producing the same 31 units for 2017.

If you've already glanced at the images, this next special edition model is called the Viper Snakeskin Edition GTC and it's the green non-ACR one. The color was inspired by the original 2010 Snakeskin version, while other features include the custom snakeskin patterned SRT stripe, the Advanced Aero Pack, GT black interior and serialized instrument panel badge. Only 25 units will be build for this particular configuration.

Last but not least is the Dodge Dealer Edition ACR, available exclusively through Dodge's highest sales volume Viper dealers, Tomball Dodge of Tomball, Texas and Roanoke Dodge of Roanoke, Ill.

It's white with a Competition Blue center stripe, Adrenaline Red driver stripe, carbon ceramic brakes, extreme aero pack, red accent stitching for the interior and a custom car cover that matches the exterior paint scheme while showcasing the customer's name above the driver's side door. By the way, such a custom cover is available on all five special edition models. In total, Dodge will be building 33 units of this new special edition configuration.

Dodge also announced that their exclusive Viper "1 of 1" customization program will continue for the 2017 model year - this way customers will still be able to create their unique "Snake" from the ground up.

Dodge Sends Off 2017 Viper With Unchanged Prices And Specs

Pricing details for the Dodge Viper have been announced for the icon's very final model year.

For 2017, buyers will need to part with at least $92,990 including the $2,600 gas-guzzler tax and $2,498 destination charge, reports FCA Authority. That means the 2017 Viper is exactly the same price as the 2016 which is appropriate given the lack of any changes.

Beyond the entry-level Viper, the GT and GTC variants are offered from $100,993 while the better-equipped GTS commands $113,093.

Just an extra $10,800 is then needed to set up into the hardcore Viper ACR, the supercar's final send-off. While the 2017 Viper remains the same as the 2016 car, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles did release a handful of special edition models, all of which sold out soon after they were announced.

No date has been given for when the final Viper will roll off the production line.

Is there anything more to be said about the 645 hp Viper ACR? Well, yes, especially if the words come out of Chris Harris’ mouth.

By today’s automotive world’s technology and enviromental standards, the V10-powered sports car is somewhat of a living relic, which is one of the reasons why the FCA Group decided to discontinue the monumental machine. Alas, the Viper will become history, but not before leaving an ode to the gearheads enamored with traditional sports cars.

That’s where the Viper ACR comes into the picture, offering, in Harris’ own words, “a 645 hp and 600 pound-feet (813 Nm) of torque, rear-wheel-drive, manual-shifting, high-downforce bargain”. It’s basically a well-equipped $145,000 race-car, sporting a complex aerodynamic kit (with a rear wing the size of the moon), impressively wide tires, immense carbon ceramic brakes, and fully adjustable dampers, among other high-performance perks.

The end result surprised Harris quite a bit, saying the Viper is in a different league, as a track car, compared to Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS model. Unsurprisingly, since it cracked up an unofficial Nurburgring lap time of 7:01.67; that’s faster than everything, really, with only the Lambo Aventador SV, Porsche 918 Spyder, Radical SR8, and Radical SR8 LM being ahead of it.
