See, I said this after being so proud of my car last winter and this winter I went to start it after sitting outside for a few weeks where it hit minus 40 and it would not start at all, the doors would not even unlock with the fob. I tried to start it on a +1 day, and the day before was -3. Those cold weeks just froze up the block. Battery is good to go thankfully, I pulled it and put it in the garage until the spring.

If the doors won't unlock the battery is nearly dead.

Trust me, it's the battery. It's too small.

0W20 synthetic oil never gets viscous enough to stop a modern engine from turning over. Provided the battery has enough reserve CCA. Ours doesn't.

Torture tested in Yellowknife and failed. The proper size is standard on automatic equipped Imprezas and is the minimum CCA Subaru should supply for all of our market.

My car's been firing up right away through the Calgary winter so far, but my car's only 5 and a half months old still, so now I'm a bit worried about it's second year during next winter..

Second winter on my car (and original battery), zero issues in -25 so far.

Mine wouldn't start this afternoon after sitting for 4 days. Had to be boosted. Lights weren't left on, and the only thing I have installed was a remote starter, but it's struggled after sitting for regular weekends even before that was installed. It had just had a two hour highway drive as well, so it should have been at a full charge. Not even 18,000km on it either. It only got as low as -16 where I was over the four days.

After boosting it, and then driving over two hours home on the same highways yesterday, it barely started this morning and flashed the battery light at me as I put it in first and drove out of the driveway (despite giving it over 5 minutes to warm up). To the shop it's going.

Freaking cold today, but it started up fine today (garaged). Took maybe 0.5-1 second longer, we'll see how it starts this afternoon when leaving work.

I popped open my hood to check after I saw this topic, and my FRS does NOT have the battery described by the OP. Maybe BRZs and FRSs come with different batteries? I've never had trouble starting, parked inside or out.

Edit: it could be the tranny. OP had a standard, mine is auto.

Slow crank for me today...

-24 degrees.

Radio not working (dont know if it detects temperature or battery power to determine whether or not to turn on)...when it turned on 20 mins later it said "Normal temperature restored"

Is is the stock radio? My pioneer didn't stop, and it was -26 c yesterday morning, the battery held good too.

I just don't drive my BRZ in the cold Calgary winter. Problem solved!

I did need to start it a few weeks ago with it was below -30 with the cold snap that came in since I needed to move it around in the garage. It started a bit roughly but it started.
