Mud flaps protecting against things scarier than mud. I know what I'm getting next.

Wow, this just happened to me a few minutes ago. A long skinny rod poked though that little flap in front of the rear passenger tire. Heard it scraping along the road until I pulled over to take a look. The rod looked flimsy enough that I feel if the flap was stronger, it probably would have just bounced off.

At least all these implements of destruction aren't skewering the tires.
Don't worry. Be happy. [ame]http://youtu.be/d-diB65scQU[/ame]

Just be glad the little flap caught it before it hit your tire. I wasn't so lucky and this happened back in October: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49852

If you are surprised by the stuff people are picking up, try being a cyclist where you are going slow enough to actually see all of the stuff on the sides of the roads! I have quite a bit of useful schwag I've picked up over the years while riding. Quite a few tools in good condition, lots of small plastic figures - animals, superheros, dinos, and in particular tons of various bungies.
