I took a gamble with Redline 0w20 for street and track because of higher moly content and favorable UOA so far. My UOA after track and autox is good. Seems like one of the better choices in 0w20 land for hard driving. But, lets face it don't have a lot of data to compare it to.

Many folks at bitog would shun the 5W-20 just because it has a Viscosity Index of 147 vs. the VI of the 0W-20 which is 172. In theory, a higher VI may mean the viscosity changes less over the oil change interval. The 5W-20 is also considered by some to be "heavy" and a "fake" 20 grade. The High Temp High Shear viscosity is 3.0 which is the same as many 30 grades. HTHS affects oil pressure and RL 5W-20 will probably have oil pressure similar to many 30 grades. Edit: Just realized the RL oils have recently been reformulated. The HTHS of the 0W-20 is 2.9 vs 3.0 on the 5W-20. Kinematic viscosity on the 5W-20 at 100C is actually a hair thinner than the 0W-20 at 100C (9.1 vs 9.0).

At the track, the 0W-20 would probably flow more quickly at start-up especially if you are ice racing. The cold cranking viscosity of a 0W oil is measured at -35C and a 5W is measured at -30C. http://www.pqiamerica.com/coldcrank.htm

I'm pretty sure that the 5W-20 uses no Viscosity Index Improvers which is why the VI is so low. VII's are usually the first thing in oil to break down. You can also email Red Line as they are very good at responding to emails and recommend the proper oil for your specific application. In all likelihood, Dave will probably recommend to use the minimum viscosity recommended in the manual. You could also ask if one oil has any advantages over the other (like shear stability) at the track.

The NOACK volatility (% of evaporation loss) is also slightly better on the 5W-20 than the 0W-20 (8% vs 9%). The same goes for most Amsoil 0W-20's vs the 5W-20's. Most 5W-20's of any brand have lower NOACK than 0W-20's, but definitely better than 5W-30's. I would want lower NOACK in something like an HPDE. Probably not quite as important at an Auto-X with only short bursts of hard driving.

Look at the NOACK on typical 5W-30's:
http://www.pqiamerica.com/March2013P...sallfinal.html
Many are right around 12-14% and the maximum allowed is 15%.
NOACK can be difficult to find since lower NOACK usually means a better base stock and manufacturers don't want you to know about their base stocks. The lowest NOACK figures usually come from oils made from or contain ester base stocks (some Amsoil, Red Line, some Motuls) and GTL base stocks (Pennzoil Ultra). More info on NOACK = http://www.pqiamerica.com/noack.htm

Unfortunately, the numbers on the bottle don't tell you much. They only tell you that the oil passed the cold cranking viscosity test at -30C or
-35C, and the viscosity at 100C is within a certain range (5.6 - 9.29 for a 20 grade and 9.3 - 12.49 for a 30 grade).

And that's a very good uoa despite about 25% shearing in 3k miles. I wonder if the 5W-20 would have sheared less? Not that the shearing hurt anything. Run RL 5W-20 under the same conditions next year and compare.

Where are you getting that figure of 25% shearing? and how is it measured? just curious.

Curious to see your samples when you have time.

anyone care to comment on the overall results of the poll? I guess I'm surprised by how many people are running 0W-20 based on the comments I've seen posted.

Oil Weight Poll For Track Usage

By comparing the viscosity at 100C when new (according to the product data sheet) to the results of the uoa.
http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=124&pcid=21
9.1 when new and 6.91 in the used oil analysis.

Of course there will be slight variances from batch to batch in oil as well as the margin for lab error (as well as my math error). The best way to compare is to submit a virgin (unused) sample of your oil along with the used sample.

If Blackstone doesn't have a voa on your particular oil in their library, sometimes they'll do it for free. You can also find a lot of them posted in the VOA forum at bobistheoilguy (although the search function there is a real pain. google ftw).

-Dennis

P.S. - There are some Motul 300V 0W-20 uoa's in the Maintenace forum in the ongoing used oil analysis thread. Don't recall if there are any on tracked or auto-x cars though.

Oh cool, well in that case I had 15.45% shearing in 988 miles on my German Castrol 0w30 based on Castrol's specifications and my Blackstone UOA (about 250-300 track miles)

Motul 300V 5w30 is what I'd run, thats what we run in our track and track/street cars.
