It's only about 200lbs heavier than the BRZ but theoretically packs ~30% more power (even more once I drop this new engine in with Evo VI turbo). I'm not in a position to buy a brand new BRZ solely for enjoying the twisties (which this island has plenty of) without selling my stateside Evo X MR, and right now @ 200hp and 6.4sec 0-60 for the BRZ that would be a huge downgrade, not an upgrade.
Side Bar: Inside The line said 7.3 seconds. They tried to blame it on the Rev Limiter being met at 59mph. I wouldn't think that you would want to redline the car for the most optimal 0-60. You'd want to stay in the power band. I wish we could get a video of inside the car for the 7.3 second 0-60.

I had an Evo 8 and got used to the power. Just keep in mind you can never have enough power, you'll always want more doesn't matter how much you've got.

I must admit, these guys are exactly why Subaru needs to build a turbo model if they expect to sell any in the states of Texas and Florida. There aren't any winding roads in those states; it's all about straight-line speed. I was talking about it on the MR2 boards and low and behold it was a guy from TX and a guy from FL whining about it's lack of power.
No winding roads in texas? WTF? Have you even been to the Hill country in south central texas around San Antonio and Austin? This place has winding roads as good as those in California! We got mountains in texas too...but they are too far west of San Antonio past the hill country in the Big Ben area, killer roads there...

But the Hill Country roads rule...

Yeah Florida is as flat as Paris Hilton...but not all of Texas...

I certainly won't be buying an FR-S or BR-Z in its current form. 200hp and 150tq just isn't any fun in my mind. With 150tq this thing is going to accelerate like a Camry, actually it will be slower than a Camry. And as far handling is concerned, it certainly isn't groundbreaking, as the results we're much lower than I had expected.

Anyways, maybe once a turbo is in place I may be interested. But for now, I'll just have to keep looking.

I'm ok with the power. One reason I don't want to jump on a launch model is I don't like the look of the stock body and wish they offered more OEM visual upgrades to clean up the look. Like better fitting wheels w/ suspension and a clean lip kit all installed from the factory.

Heh, some of the STI rumors sound really good. Personally because I'm a geek, I don't want forced induction until cars start coming with more sophisticated CVT or electric driven supercharging, I like the idea of dialing in boost without waste and lag.

I guess being too young to have a use for a car (or have money for a car for that matter) has its benefits :P I can have fun watching the market evolve while y'all stress over what to buy.

I loved reading that article!

It means a couple things to me..
First.. I won't have much buyers remorse later on when the STI version comes out.
Second.. With the exception of the variable valve timing they mentioned the aftermarket should be able to duplicate or even improve on the mods that Subaru is planning.
Third.. if they are thinking they can make an extra 50 hp with VVT and bolt-ons, that means this motor should be highly receptive to bolt-on mods and should be a blast to work on. We might the see another 20hp with intake and exhaust.. which would be awesome!!!

Yea man! I just want the car already. The only thing that will be hard to duplicate is the carbon fiber roof, but in my opinion the premium that you will have to pay for the STI version will not justify the weight savings.

I agree.. the cost of the STI version is going to be pretty high. I think we may find that a standard version with $4k in mods will perform better than the STI factory version that will likely be at least $5k more.

The variable valve timing will be hard to duplicate as you would have to swap heads to get it.. But, if you were really looking for that power, you could do a more aggresive cam to get that high end. You would just sacrifice some of the smoothness at low end.

The higher redline should be achievable when the aftermarket comes up with the ECU crack and offers us tuning modules. The question is.. will Subaru make any other mods to the motor to allow that (ie.. higher quality valves)? If the stock motor components are strong enough (as I think they will be), then you'll be able to easily raise redline!

The CF roof would be cool... but not worth the money.. i'm guessing at least. If all you cared about was the weight savings, you'd probably duplicate that with some other changes.

Subaru's marketing guy was never quoted that it would be +50hp. The editor might have added that figure in as speculation. I'll be waiting for this version nonetheless and am a bit relieved it's not turbo <-- THAT could bring the cost up even higher.

I wouldn't get too excited too soon, remember the dyno runs shown indicated that the last 450rpm of this engine was completely useless.

It could be easy to fix, it could be hard to fix, just gotta wait and see.

I have no faith at all that the information in that article is true. There are just as many or more articles/reviews that say a turbo is coming. If anything the idea of a big hp bump on the na engine seems like the least likely thing to happen. Maybe an extra 15-20 hp could be squeezed from this engine, but after that it is going to get expensive quickly. Besides, I still don't see subaru developing 2 seperate high output versions of this engine to put in different cars, both of which are low volume vehicles (wrx & brz). Since the turbo fa20 has already been confirmed I think we know which way this will end up.
