Is that the only difference - the manual has a shorter 6th gear? That the same everywhere or just USA?

These numbers are actually pretty good. The corolla is listed similarly at 26/34, but owners have been averaging much more than that.

I wonder if they tested pre-production cars or got a production one already. Kinda hoping to see some crash-tests before May.

I had always thought manual cars get better EPA.

I've been enlightened.

It's because the shift light comes on later than on more fuel minded cars. The tester only shifts when the car tells him to shift. Expect to see better economy depending on your driving style.

They used to, but now with the autos having greater than 5 gears (7/8 is becoming the new norm) and using better components to reduce drivetrain drag they are becoming better. Basically with more gears they hit a better overdrive gear at cruising and they now achieve similar drivetrain loss to a manual (roughtly 15% on a RWD). It would be even better on the BRZ if they used a 7 speed auto instead of the 6.

I'm still getting a manual tho.

My RSX like I said gets 24city/34highway and its a shitty automatic in comparison to the BRZ's. My car is extremely cheap on gas because of those figures. So If I buy a BRZ it will actually stay the same FTMTFW!!!!

My issue is that the FRS and the Veloster Turbo are the two cars I'm considering, and the VT now has price, practicality and fuel economy in its favour. All the FR-S has left is RWD and I can't justify the purchase on that alone, tempting as it may be.

Subaru boxers seem so "meh" on fuel economy. I'm used to averaging 33mpg in my MR2 with a 20v 1.6L 4AGE engine (requires Premium)... The 20v engine is from 1995 and makes 100hp-per-liter without direct injection, so you'd think Subie/Toyota could do a wee bit better. The MR2 weighs about 2250lbs and has a CoD of .35, so less weight but also less slippery than the BRZ's .27

Too bad they couldn't put engine start-stop technology in to bump up the city rating... dunno how that would work with a manual trans, though.

There's a couple outliers in that, though. I think some transmissions have more drivetrain loss than others. I know the Audi A4 gets better mileage with the 6MT then the 8AT, and the Camry 4cyl gets better with the 6MT than the 6AT. Generally speaking though, manual cars are becoming antiquated

Shift light? That can be changed by the driver. Not sure what you are talking about. You can shift before the light goes off.
