hmm so if you are buying the auto "for the gas savings", you may want to think over that decision a bit more.
That's not the real driving reason for me getting the auto but that's about 3 years for me, and I'll probably drive the car for an additional 140K miles or more past that (based on my normal ownership history) so that all figures in.

I also would need to factor in the difference between my current ride (avg combined 16MPG actual) for the overall savings. That's a few more cents saved per gallon.

Unless the manual gets 25/34 in the real world (not EPA tests) like the auto, I'm out. Thanks Toyota, it's been a fun ride, but premium gas is too darn expensive here.

The key to good city fuel economy is to accelerate normally/quickly, shift early, and minimize braking and idle. City economy is about not wasting the kinetic energy of your car. Highway there's not as much you can do about a short 6th gear.

Guys that want manual + fuel economy... Just buy the car... wait for an automatic to crash in your area, buy the differential... profit.

I don't... just saying lol

Stop drinking milk and spend the money on gas?

I wouldn't bail just yet. Maybe wait and see what real world numbers are? Wouldn't you feel a little silly if everyone posted "OMG WOW I'm getting 38MPG".

They're not going too but you never know. I never trust these reports as much as I trust the people trying to hyper mile. I also wonder what gains might be had with a new intake / less restrictive exhaust.

Heh, it's only $250 savings annually. That means if the Auto costs 1k more MSRP, you'd have to own the car for 4 years to even break even. After that point, I'll gladly pay an extra $250 a year to have more fun.

The auto has the same differential lol... what you could do however is buy the differential from a crashed Lexus IS or something, that would give you a few % better fuel economy on the highway and close the gap pretty much all the way.

I think with this much outrage over the EPA rating gap, Toyota/Subaru might be considering a revised gearbox for the next iteration.

that and its more about how you drive then what the mpg is rated at

Same as what we knew from the brochure.

I don't mind the ratings except for the gearing of the 6th gear. Should be geared longer for better mpg on the highway. But we have been through this all previously.

premium is only 15-30 cents more per gallon than standard fuel..it equates to 2-5 dollars more a tank...thats not very much...the problem is the damn foreigners who change gas prices sporadically, nothing you can do about that except buy a prius

Very true. With gas prices these days, I've been trying to change my driving style. Shifting early, easing on the gas, coasting as much as I could got my truck from 18 to 21 mpg!

If 500/year is a breaking issue, this is not the car you should be looking at IMO. Tons of fun cars that get outstanding fuel economy - Elantra, Fit, etc...
