If you drive it appropriately you can surely eek out better MPG in the manual than what is stated. The EPA tests follow a very precise scripted scenario to get their numbers, so it's not always 100% accurate to what you can get in the real world.

It'll take you awhile to offset the cost of the auto. If you want the manual buy the manual. Even 30mpg for a sports car is quite good.
You could replace the final drive with the 3.7 that some jdm modes have. Personally I'll be looking for a 4.5-5 fd for my car but high revs on the highway ont bother me.

That's true. Ever since the early 2000's automatics have risen over manuals at FE and I think its because of the 6-8 spd auto's coming out with better gearing vs the old 5 spd and 4 spd auto's. My 2002 RSX auto is hwy rated at 34 mpg while the Type S was rated at 29-30. Deja Vu'

That's because you are used to the 4.7 in your ITR . Bouncing in and out of VTEC on the highway is normal...

So according to my math.
If the auto costs $1200 more, as per the reports we are seeing, and the combined ratings are 25/28 respectively for man/auto. You will have to drive the auto 69,767 miles before it pays for itself in gas savings relative to the manual.... hmm so if you are buying the auto "for the gas savings", you may want to think over that decision a bit more. Math using gas at $4.00 a gallon. Last edited by bambbrose; 03-21-2012 at 01:04 PM. |
