+1 to getting another quote....that seems a little high to me, but I'm no expert.

With regards to the incident itself...don't beat yourself up; the passenger rear fender of this car is the worst blind spot on the vehicle...so very easy to hit something there. I back my car into my garage everyday and still have to do it slowly and sometimes restart to make sure I'm okay...and I've done it hundreds of times over!

Good luck with the repair work...I'm sure it will look brand new once they're done.

That is really fucked up. Best you report it to the authorities.

Bad enough people are jealous of the twins, but worse off when someone's being plain racist. Don't tolerate that...

That is a shitty situation. I'm South Asian and luckily I've never had to deal with that. I think it's time for you to invest in a go pro camera if this is a common occurrence in your area.

the worst part is that the damage covers both rear bumper and rear quarter panel and the damage in both areas has deformed both panels. the damage is not severe enough to warrant replacement of either panel but still requires significant work to recover the flat plane, paint, and clear coat.

Had similar damage to you on my rear bumper (Scraped paint on side of bumper but it missed the fender luckily!). They only resprayed the side of bumper, not the whole thing. Being satin white pearl or "whiteout" for americans, i didn't get a perfect match. Would still be unnoticeable to the untrained eye though. Cost me only 300

$1500 is entirely reasonable.

If I was doing it...
[RI= remove and install, RR =remove and replace, REF= paint] Labor times on the right.

RR Rear bumper cover (bumper cost is $322.50list) 1.8
REF Bumper Cover 2.9
RI Roof Molding 0.3
REPAIR Qtr Panel 3.5
REF Qtr Panel 2.6
RI Qtr Glass 2.0
RI Tail lamp 0.3
RI Qtr Panel Wheel Liner 0.4
Clear Coat Adjust 1.6

Paint and Material $198.50
HAZMAT Disposal (mandatory) $5.00

$1301.60 (including tax)

Keep in mind more labor Could be needed depending on the techs skill, shop and how it is finished (be it a little bondo) or metal finished. Also make sure the shop removed the fender liner! If they just use studs from the front to pull the dent you will have raw metal on the backside of the dent that likely will do un-painted and = rust down the road. Bare minimum scuff the surface yourself and get a can of 3M Undercoat (pt#0881) and hit the backside before replacing the fender-liner.

Some shops may choose to repair the bumper. They will fix it with plastic filler (be it epoxy based (good) or bondo (on a bumper bad.) Then they will blend the color on the bumper followed by clear-coating the whole bumper. Do not let them try to just paint and clear the area the repair will only look good for a short while before the edges begin to show.
