I am thinking of doing the same thing. I don't care about the red-tape, I just want to know how to get through it, but unfortunately it's like a previous forum member *fatoni" said, nobody every answer the question. People always respond with negativity. They try to discourage you by telling how hard it will be or speak condescending to you by telling that its not logical. Truth is tuning cars to begin with isn't logical b/c very few if any of us get any financial gain from doing it. Unless its a means to and end this whole thing is illogical. Its a hobby/interest and what anybody does with their time and money is their business. The fact is a majority people don't even really know how to go about doing it b/c they never done it or tried to do it. They for the most part likely get their basis of understanding from here-say. Nobody every offers any positive advice on how to do it or just positivity on the subject period.

I understand I have not answered your question yet, but that's b/c I don't know the answer. All I know is, is that there is red-tape to cut through. What I have heard is people going through Canada, but not the RHD version GT86, but if that isn't your concern check to see what models/options Canada is getting. Chances are the only difference might be that its LHD. Also you'll need someone you know who lives in Canada- you need their address to register it. They may even have to buy the car in their name register it and then sign it over to you as a gift. If you want the RHD version from Japan you'll have to save up and pay full price for it up front unless you can find a bank to lend you 25-30K or more to purchase it, and that is unlikely but not out of the question. Then you'll have to have the car shipped here either as a full car or kit-car, this is why I think its important to go to JP to get to know who and where the car is coming from so you'll better assurance of what your getting. After the car gets here you'll have to register the car- so before hand you have to do your leg-work and find out what states will let you register the car- hopefully you have family in one of those states. I heard Las Vegas, NV. as a possibility. Again all this what I heard from an acquaintance of mine. He is from Taiwan and he works for BuddyClub in Ontario CA., he said he heard of people importing newer cars to U.S. and would help find out how to do it when I have the resources to do it.

I plan on waiting till the the 2nd or 3rd generation. For 1. I need to save the money and pay-off/sell my current car, but for 2. I want to to do research and get real answers as well as take a trip to JP to further inquire about it- not to mention I've been wanting to go there for years now.

I say research it yourself- go to shows and talk to people or go tuner shops and make inquiries. And if you can take time off of work and take a trip to JP. Go find out where there are people you can make inquiries of in JP. You can get tickets to JP as low as $700 if you plan enough ahead. It will be a trip well worth it, JP is great place. My point is do your own research b/c it doesn't seem like anybody here cares to answer your question with some validity or perhaps they're in the same boat as me and just don't know- I think the latter is true.

I guess I was wrong about Canada they are getting the Scion brand as well. But, I have heard of people getting JDM vehicles to the U.S. from Canada.

I don't know the answer to the OP question either, but I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to import it from Germany with LHD? I know a few military types that have brought back a car with them, but I'm pretty sure they all fell into the Classic category.

I guess you would need to see which country has the closest regs to ours for the easiest transition.

The emissions is the biggest headache I would suspect.

BMW's European Delivery offers that but since the cars are built in Munich, it's still a US spec but you just get to drive it before it is shipped to the US.

Not sure if it would work with Japanese cars from Europe though since they are built in Japan and shipped to Germany. I suggest checking with the DMV, EPA, DOT, NHTSA first to see what is required before anything.

What exactly is so embarassing with buying the FR-S?

I really don't get all the hate towards Scion or the FR-S. These cars are all the exact same once you strip the minor difference in details away.

I really don't understand this attitude towards the Scion and for one, I'm actually glad/proud I'm buying the Scion version if this is the attitude other 86 drivers have.

Look down on me if you must but to be honest, we're all driving 86's so who the hell cares which version it is. Just be happy another one is on the road!

I'm really sick of seeing all the flack towards Scion and the FR-S.
