Regarding all the talk of air flow under the hood..

Some locals here in the car club recently drilled out their fender side panels, where your 86 pistons are, amazing how much air can come through on those sections, sitting comes out like a hair dryer no joke.. Something to consider anyhow.

Is it temperature or pressure that is the concern? If pressure it would seem opening up the side fenders (as folks have mentioned) would be a great way to go.

I can actually attest to this...the FR-S generates a ton of underhood pressure. When I was running my CF hood it was extremely noticeable because it would flex the sides of the hood up (near the wheel arches). At 160 there was about a 1-1/2 inch gap between the hood and the wheel arches...I decided to slow down since i didn't want the hood to break. That hood was also vented so it's definitely a science as to where venting should be to alleviate that pressure. I agree with most of you guys as well, as for me I manufacturer carbon fiber products such as hoods.I myself have a carbon fiber hood on my FRS and there is a great amount of pressure build from within and under the hood, since the hood is a light yet solid piece, it generates a lot more flex than the alumuniun OEM hood, since pressure is being pushed from underneath the hood and from air resistance pressure being excerted from the outside of the hood. As for the OEM hood there also some flex being excerted yet you can't notice since its painted and the fact that alumunium retains it rigidity shape better than carbon.

That's just the inside you still put the cover back over it with holes drilled or cut out the mesh on the brz inserts

Ohh alright now I see, adding a mesh might actually make it look way better. I thought they were driving around with huge cut side panels

There is a thread on this and a mesh part you can buy through Rally Sport Direct. See: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33462. I was ready to do this because: (i) I hate have a fake vent on my BRZ, and (ii) extra cooling would be nice.

I held off, however, for a couple of reasons. If you pop the hood, you'll notice that the hood hinges are right in the area where the vent would go. So, I have a hard time believing that a ton of air could flow through that spot. Also, I was concerned that rain would get in and then get stuck inside the quarter panel. Any thoughts on those issues?

I did not know about this. I'm considering un-thanking your post so I can thank it a second time. I can't see any of the pictures or videos in the related links yet, but I'm looking forward to looking into it later. The thought of hood lift has really been breaking my balls lately.
