Just picked the car up today, 4 weeks after I dropped it off. The problem was closest diagnosed as catastrophic valvetrain failure. Apparently a rocker broke or failed and the rest went quickly after.

Replaced under drivetrain warranty with a bill to Toyota of $18k. So basically between my end-of warranty punchlist ($4k) and this repair they have covered almost the full retail price of this car.

I didn't get the prices itemized on my paperwork, but the service advisor's documents came to $17,9xx. So I did exaggerate slightly by rounding up.

I really missed this car while it was gone. I'm glad to have it back.

I knew when I bought an early car that this was a risk... but if Toyota was actually going to build a car I wanted to buy, I wasn't going to leave them hanging.

@Justin.b Rounding up a hundred bucks on an $18k invoice isn't much of an exaggeration HAHA. It would be interesting to see how they itemized the whole thing. Mass produced machines fail, cool to see you stick it out and back to enjoying car again. Keep us posted.

I have to admit, having an engine fail has made me incredibly conscious driving the car. I'm constantly muting the radio to listen for any noises. I'm afraid to push it.

I had to alter our routes to keep from long cruising at constant speed / rpm during the break-in period, which I consider over now. (Immediately put the first 100 miles on it and changed the oil, then changed again at 1000 miles, now I'll get back to every 5000 miles as I normally do). My wife is just glad I've finally cleared her to take the interstate in to work instead of the alternate route.

I'm sure I'll get comfortable again, but if I do end up keeping this car for a while, I will keep an extra engine on-hand for peace of mind. (A salvage engine, not a hand built $18k engine)

13 frs with catted El header 54k miles. Just threw a rocker arm through the valve cover yesterday. Longevity my ass. I'll be rebuilding it myself with upgraded internals. Including some kinda cage for these awful rocker arms.

I bought my 2016 new with 7km on the odo and got extended powertrain warranty to 200k km (120k miles-ish?). I am actually hoping my engine blows up before then so that I get a new one to be able to mod after the warranty goes.

Trade it for an early13 and you odds go way up. Don't see many 14s and up going bad. If they did there is probably a back story.

Yep. Most don't. It is the vocal minority that do that skew the perception.
