If you're new, I'd suggest you start with Harry's lap timer for iPhone or Android ($20), a Bluetooth OBDII module ($50?, you can also use it to diagnose and clear CELs), and a $25 RAM mount for your phone.

I don't mind ''used'' at all, since from what I've seen they all start at around 600$. I'm setting a budget of 750$ for everything, but the lower the better !
AIM Solo DL is the way to go for the OBD2 logging, and you can integrate it using racerender.

Hey I got my FRS a month ago and I want to do autocross within the next month or so. I haven't done anything to the car except put a aftermarket Catback on it. I was wondering if there were anything I should do to the car? It'll be my first time autox

Should go as stock as possible for your first ran. U will learn a lot about the car and u as a driver. I feel like the best mistake and one can make is going autox first time with an overbuilt car for their ability.

Go out there and just have fun.

Many people, including the quote above and myself, will tell you to go out and learn the car before making changes. It is difficult to learn unless you have some way to review what happened. Therefore, some kind of video of your driving would be helpful. The best would be to see your hands on the wheel and the car. If you have a GoPro or some other camera, use it. You will learn more from that than anything else in my opinion.

But most importantly, have fun. If you get upset and whiny about not winning your first time out, you will have a bigger struggle. A good target is to make each run you do faster than the previous.

Cheers,

Best mod is the driver mod. Just plan on soaking up as much as you can when starting out. The car will be fine as-is.

Bring a good quality tire gauge - you'll likely need to adjust tire pressures, and you'll want a reliable tool with which to do it. I use a bicycle pump for adding air; it works, it's small, its air supply is inexhaustible, and it never fails. Bring food/snacks and water for the driver.

If you can, find out who the most capable instructors are that will be at the event, and then find a way to get them into your car for one or more of your runs. Depending upon how the event is structured, simply asking in a nice way may be all you need to do.

+1 on shooting video of your driving, if you can. Reviewing what really happened instead of what you think you remember happened is much more productive.

My car dyno'd ~365hp at the wheels and I'm about to hit Buttonwillow in a couple of weeks. I am also installing a set of new RS3 tires for the stock rims. I will run these out before upgrading to wider tire/rims in 2015. The question is that with this much power and these small of tires, I'm worried about extreme oversteer in the corners. Should I find a way to add weights to the trunk to help with this and balance the weight more? Anyone know what is allowed for HPDE and added weight in the trunk?

Do nothing, go stock. You'll know what you want to change after that first day without having to ask for opinions

I can always alter your tune to emulate a stock car's output... why get all this power if you're not going to use it? Learning throttle control is one of the most basic skills you learn at the track. The Mustang/Vette/Porsche/Ferrari/etc. guys don't have it any different.

Exactly. If you can't learn to control your right foot, then you SHOULD NOT BE ON THE TRACK as you will be a danger to yourself and others.

Got a track related question? I'll try to answer.

Wow, tough crowd - I will ease into it, don't worry. I just noticed that some drivers at the track are adding weight to the trunk to better balance the front to rear weight ratio. That was my question - guess I should have left the rest out.

P.S. my previous car was a C6 Corvette but I had that car corner balanced.
