It would be interesting and probably very enlightening to see the ratio between "tuned" engine problems/failures vs un-tuned. OEM engine calibrations are intentionally very safe which is why it's so easy for tuners to tweak a few more hp out by reducing or eliminating the OEM safety margins such as overly rich AFR near redline to reduce peak EGT.

I think more stock cars on 91 are having issues than tuned cars on better octane fuels..
jmo ymmv.

My car has less than 1000 miles running 91 octane..of the 12000 total.

Wouldn't that be subjected to whoever is the tuner of choice?

I was thinking the same thing. Surprised this hasn't been reported by autoblog or jalopnik yet. I believe they reported a tsb issue with the twins a while back, can't remember what though.

Most of them tested the car in the winter & spring time. Hopefully they start testing them at the track in the hot months and get the DI failure. Im thinking we will see many more cars with this issue as the heat starts getting worse.

Do you guys think this can be cured with a software update? I read somewhere that was being done in South Africa. If so, why not just role it out to everyone??

I find it amusing that Toyota has fixed all of the people who voted, and Subaru has denied all the people who voted.

Software cant fix this problem, thus isw hat happenes when materials are made (seals) and the tolerances that were allowed during production allowed for too wide a gap which is enough for a failure

There is a software update that helps prevent the issue from occurring. The only way for sure to gets the fix in the US is to buy a tune that includes it.

Yes it can, it seems to be happening due the heat from knock/donation during very certain conditions (quickly shifting gears at high rpm). There is a transient ignition map for this and is what is adjusted in the newer software.

I really don't get why everyone is freaking out about this. Do people not remember the cel/cam problem our cars first had, go look in the stickied thread, there were 200+ cases ranging from small fixes to new engines but now we don't hear much about it anymore because it was dealt with, changes were made and now it's not really an issue.

There have only been ~12 members on here that have had seal problems so far. There are 25,000 86s on the road... let Toyota and Subaru deal with the problem just like the last cel problem.

You all bought a brand new platform, with a brand new engine and now lots of you are up up arms that everything isn't perfect from the get go. Everything goes through updates, changes, service bulletins, recalls, that's the trade off for hopping to a new platform right away.

Update: Alright I've been messaging individuals about their DI failures and so far I've gotten responses from 6/10 people that voted and here is what I've found:

4 are on 91 octane only, 1 on 93, 1 on a custom E20 tune
All are naturally aspirated
Some were completely stock, the most modded was a headerback and intake. All were on the stock header I believe
Half were tuned, half were stock/untuned
All had been on the track most being between 100 and 500 miles, one having 2500 miles
Build date seems to have nothing to do with it (wide range, thousands apart)

Take what you want from that, but again, there have only been a small number of these failures, for all we know they could've had defective seals or improperly installed seals to begin with, or a different issue all together (bad plugs, coils, injectors etc)

If any of you others that voted see this and haven't received a PM from me, please contact me and I'll send you a few questions, only takes a minute.
