Worst Badge Engineered Vehicles

Wow, lotta riled emotions in here.

Clearly "worst" in the thread title is referring to MOST BLATANT, not lowest quality. The HSV Clubsport R8 and the Vauxhall VXR8 are a GREAT automobile, but one of the worst examples of badge engineering ever. They literally only changed the badges, some digital graphics, and the stitching on the seats.

I don't like this kid and his pipe dream any more than the next guy, but this is a legitimate thread, and quite a few of you can't seem to get past your hate for him to the actual substance of the thread.

In all honesty, I think you'll be bound to fail. Your car will be taken away from you by the bank, you'll go hungry, parents will probably kick you out for making a stupid decision, and you'll probably regret making that decision. I don't see any maturity in here.

You're not a cool badass by doing what you're doing. Maturity doesn't just come in forms of how people talk. Its involves, actions, responsibilities, and priorities.

You contradicted yourself by saying you're buying this car even though your thread states "Worst Badge Engineered Vehicles." So you're spending money on a car (branded or not) that you think is terrible?

Just because I say it's terrible badge engineering, doesn't mean I DONT like the vehicle. I thought the F-Body vehicles we're bad badge engineering, but hey I loved all the generations of Camaro's/Firebirds and the culture they carried.

And you can't lie, Toyota and Subaru somewhat half assed the exterior differences between the BRZ and FRS. Most of us would had atleast wanted different tail lights between the two.

And what do you mean I'm dropping 10k on a unreleased car? I said I should have about 10k, which I could use as a downpayment in AUGUST!
The FRS will most likely have already been released in AUGUST. Maybe if you used you're 'cleverness' you would have read through post thoroughly.

Only problem is having a job during college.

And Social life?! Even if I didn't have the expense of this car during college, I still wouldn't have time for entertainment and fun, I'm a freaking engineering major. I'm not a party wild guy, my main focus is to get good grades in college and maintain a job.

Kidwonder, seeing some of the other threads you've started, maybe chill out a little. No need to keep mentioning your engineering major btw, you're not impressing anyone or getting sympathy for the terrible courseload you'll supposedly have next year.
Giccin's comments about financial stuff may or may not apply fully to your situation but they're good advice, regardless of whether mom is paying for college or not. Coming from a freshman in college, I'm not getting a car until I have a real job, it's just not an expense I want to deal with without proper income.

Giccin is trying to give you advice. It was maybe a little on the harsh side, and given some of the recent flak it probably seems like she is on the bad side.

We probably both sound like parents; We do not think that this is the best course of action for your money. New cars in particular are not something wise to invest money as a young person. My parents have helped me financially (though the XRS is 100% bought, owned, insured, gassed, and maintained by myself), much like yours will in the near future. I do not however take it for granted, and I continue to save my money. I'm hoping to put a sizeable amount of cash towards a house so I can reduce the mortgage to something I consider acceptable when the time is right.

It's good that you've taken an interest in Engineering. Many members here are Engineers of some type or another. I'm in a Engineering program myself. One last word to the wise: I found out much earlier in my internet career that it's better to not discuss age, in fact I don't like to IRL either.

I'll give you some valuable advice, when objects cost more than you did, don't mention your age or you get no respect. Paying for a car with borrowed money from your mom while you're in HS THINKING about being an engineering major means nothing. Guess what, I was an engineering major for a semester or two, I'm currently declared as seeking a PhD in psych, and I'm about to switch that to exercise science and nutrition...so that makes me an engineer, doctor of psychology and a sports physician and nutritionist? YAI!!!

Actually. I don't think they half-assed the interior. I think SCION half-assed the interior. Subaru did a decent job. Not a great one but enough to feel somewhat comfortable.

10k DP on a car REGARDLESS--prior to or after release. Still means you blowing off 10k on a CAR. I still sit with my statement of your idea being 'clever.'

Right. Then you say your mom's insurance is going to pay? I've never heard of an insurance company paying for a customer's child to go to college. If she did/does work for an insurance company I still don't see a company doing that unless it's your mom herself going to school.

Your needs and wants are really jumbled up. Also, you are "in process of becoming an engineering major" you declare yourself as an "engineering major" if you are already in a college institution.

I also really think you underestimate the cost of college.

Anyone going to a University or state college will tell you how much more they're paying in the past Fall '11 semester, winter '11 and spring '12 than they have in the previous years. Private institutions are also getting more expensive. Tuition and the cost of living will also continue to rise. Take extreme note of that.

I'll also give you a reality check, Kid. You're NOT GUARANTEED a job when you graduate. You can ask a number of college graduates on this form. Some of those were lucky and got a job because of great networking--others fell into a hole and are digging themselves out from paying off loans and some caught a lifeline.

Like Exage said, I'm giving you advice in a pretty damn harsh way. I'm not going to sugar coat you the reality of a current college student.

If you decide to pursue your current route. Go ahead I'm just a random person on the internet. I'm sure someone will buy your FRS/BRZ for cheap with low miles down the line.

To the young guy:

I was in your shoes. I dropped out of highschool when I was 17 and worked full time and wasted all my money on a car (95 Cobra).

I also went through college, on my own dime.

Here's what I can tell you: a tiny ~$25k car is an extremely poor decision at your current point in life. EXTREMELY poor.

If you're planning on college, you need a cheap, reliable car that can carry a lot of stuff. Moving from place to place, changing your mind about getting an apartment or living in the dorms (do the dorms!)....yeah. Get a used Ranger or something. You will have more fun in college, because you will have more freedom and more spending money. I promise.

General rule of thumb for intelligent car purchasing: Don't buy anything unless it's under 50% of what you earn in a year, and NEVER EVER EVER tether yourself to a new car payment unless you have a stable career.

The additional stress and worry caused by going beyond your means will far outweigh the "yay I have a new sports car" happiness.

If mom and dad are fully funding you....just know that you're at a huge disadvantage because you're not going to learn fiscal responsibility. That's the kind of crap that leads to the bank collapse because people took out loans for things they couldn't afford, and stuff like the Occupy movement.
