My best guess would be that in the development process not much time was devoted to testing 91 octane. Both the crickets and this detonation issue seem to originate from this oversight.

More importantly, can we verify the current us-Toyota Ecu flash solves this issue?

I assume his dealer is Toyota not Subaru.

This. The problem is caused by the ECU's behavior, nothing else. The ECU can easily be changed to get around this problem as already seen through data logs.

I know the OP will have an uphill battle just because this is the second time it's been in for this issue, but hell, there seems to be plenty of supporting evidence that fixing the ECU's program will prevent this from happening in the first place. Both from Toyota and others who have done datalogs and then modified their tunes to fix it.

Everything is a wear item, but I don't like my wear items to have accelerated wear due to shitty OEM ECU programming. I stuck with the OEM ECU/tune to avoid issues like this, until Subaru releases the corrected ROM to US customers it seems that I should get a tune that addresses this putting myself at risk from a warranty perspective while fixing this issue that "doesn't exist"....

Visconti has stated in his most recent tune that the fix is in place. I'm currently running that tune. Spark tables have been updated to retard post 5.5k. I don't know if that lingo is correct as I'm no expert but just stating what I've read.

I share the same frustration. It's a catch 22.

I guess the bottom line is that for now we should be granny-shifting after all

Correct, and both Subaru and Toyota should not only provide the updated ECU flash but replacement of the impacted wear items, since that premature wear is caused by the faulty ECU in the first place.

I certainly hope this is getting the right attention with corporate and a solution is on the way to the states in rapid order.

Unless it happens outside of shifting too.. like Mike I also modulate throttle to get the car to do what I want on the track. I don't power shift it or anything like that, but I will be near redline, lift, then floor it to get rotation. That should pretty much do the same thing as the near-redline upshift being mentioned. Although .6 second shifts aren't that hard to do without power/quick shifts either

Great, thanks! This might push me to get a tune after all.

With out how many people are starting to be affected by it, it will inevitably happen sooner than later. Me being a victim for the 2nd time. Same stock motor.

So we're not the only one to have this happen twice...
