A few thoughts:
1) Most interesting of all is the video. If the under-hood shots are of an STI test mule, it appears to be an AUTOMATIC. Note the lack of a clutch reservoir. If true, then that's good news for the automatic lovers of this fine car. I've never driven one, but I have yet to hear an automatic owner disparage the experience; it's supposed to be very well done. For those wondering why the battery is over on the right side, it's because the car is right-hand drive for Japan. 2) Manufacturers reimburse dealers for warranty work, although often at an hourly rate that makes mechanics unhappy. In other words, dealers do not decide what is covered by warranty; an owner can always appeal to the manufacturer's rep to obtain warranty coverage. Manufacturers decide, not dealers, although user-unfriendly dealers can be obstructive at times. 3) Some people may be assuming that the STI version will be turbo charged. Not so far. Initial word from Subaru was that they would not be making a turbo version at all. They ARE working on an STI, but it's normally aspirated (non-turbo/supercharger). One was photographed testing on the Nurburgring some time ago. IIRC they were talking about a 30 bhp increase over the regular version, which sounds about right. That would put the engine at 115 bhp/liter, which is approaching the practical limit for a regular street car while still keeping pricing and warranty claims reasonable. The question is price. My guess is around $4000 over the standard BRZ/FR-S. Pricey, perhaps, but my guess is that it will sell well. I'd consider an STI, but only if the ride is not meaningfully harsher than my BRZ Limited. My S2000 has taught me that it's at the limit of ride harshness over our decaying infrastructure; I don't want another one of those, thank you. YMMV.

Yes, that's what I am thinking. If brz sti came out, it will totally miss the point of "affordable sport car".

If I had to guess, it would be released as a 2016-17 model. Still at least another 2 years.

Don't tell me that! I was hoping for a MY2014 sti! I want all the updated exhaust, intake, and updated valve timing in a package that I can buy straight from the dealer. It would be nice to have that 30hp bump without having to do the mods yourself. I am not like many of y'all on the forum, I know very little about cars except how to drive them and take them to the shop to get maintained. So something like the sti is great, I can pay a little bit more cash up front to get something similar to what you guys are doing to your cars on your own. So I am hoping that they bring it out this year!

yup,2 more years....well 1 left. Next year even, as a 2015 model.
2012 was released as a 2013. So 2014 will be called as a 2015 model. Probably during the spring/summer of 2014. We'll see.....

I think Subaru will and Toyota will not get one unless they renegotiating things again.
AFAIK the engine the BRZ has is shared with the 4th generation 2014 Forester and the USDM model has 250 hp @ 5600 rpm & 258 lb-ft @ 2000 - 4800 rpm. Not saying it will have the same but the potential is there. I am unsure but I understand the JDM Forester outputs 276 hp. But I expect the price to exceed that of the STI. |

well the wrx has a much more successful of an aftermarket and the sti seems to work there. combine that with the fact that a significant portion of brz owners spent the extra money for the exclusivity of the badge over that of the scion and the brz sti makes a lot of sense.
