At the end of the day, none of the 86's, FR-S's, or BRZ's have a center armrest. There's no reason to get hung up on what you're going to do with your inboard elbow when you're not driving, because from the factory, it's not going to be setting on any padded or designated surface. Your only hope is the aftermarket can accommodate your desires with a center console retrofit.

Did you even see the wear pads on a shift fork from someone who does this a lot? The excess wear can lead to very sloppy shifting and AFAIK you need to replace the shift fork to fix it.

I've seen people remove the original pad completely, clad weld it, and then grind back to the correct thickness. But that's a lot of effort that could have been solved by adding a center arm rest.

I can see myself doing this...I have never owned a car without an armrest. Oh well, I guess I just start leaning to the left.

If someone were to put this together, I would be in line to purchase on day 1.
Without ripping the stock center console apart, cutting and gluing in the rails for it to slide on, I don't see how this is possible. Well, you could design a new piece from the ground up... $$$

I was just thinking of folding the thing in half and throwing it in my glove box when I need the cup holders. Nothing permanent. Just simple and quick.

That's a great idea. Maybe we have some FT86club.com bean bag armrests made up for those interested. I'd buy one.

I definitely want an armrest and will make one if they don't give an option. Having something to sit on top of the cup holders will also prevent them from collecting tons of crap in them. Why do cup holders act as black holes for flecks of crap? One of the mysteries of the universe.

It's even explicitly stated in the Evo owner's manual not to rest your hand on the shifter.

This is actually a bad habit that I'm guilty of too. Not only because one should always try to keep 2 hands on the wheel, but resting a hand on the stick of a manual transmission puts excess stress on the shifter components. Over time, the added stress puts greater wear on the components and leads to failures.

I won't miss it. I've never found it difficult to keep both hands on the wheel.

I think it's because they are made using the same materials of a belly button.
