Took it sideways for the first time, Friday. Bone stock, really fun. Need to get some new tires, though.

What up, I am in the process of lining up my purchase of a BRZ and am shocked to see that the biggest 86 forum doesn't have a dedicated drift sub-forum :O

What's the deal? haha

My BRZ is going to be a dedicated drift toy to compliment the other rides in my fleet and I hope I'll get a lot of good info out of this board

There's like 10 people on this forum of thousands and thousands that actively drift their FRS/BRZ lol. At least there's a good solid thread where a lot of the info has been accumulating for drifting. This is probably as much as we'll get on this forum to be honest.

Seriously?
Didn't expect that.
Well, could be a good thing. Maybe all the Tokyo Drift kids have moved on to some other hip fad. haha

Page/group is called GT86 Drift club.

Here's the description/rules...

Toyota GT86 Drift club.

Don't join if you:
Think the driving aids are necessary
Don't want to see skids
Think street drifting is bad
Want to talk about fuel mileage
Want to talk about plasti-dipping your wheels/intake/tampon
Think that your Auto 86 is awesome
Want to discuss group buys of sharkfins.
Cannot take banter.

Two rules

1: If you want to join, you need to provide an action picture/video of your 86 drifting, or at the very least, doing something impressive.

2: Anything shared within the club is done so for club members viewing only. No sharing of material posted within.

I requested an ad to the group as well. Really want to get into drifting more. I usually go by myself up the canyons local and stuff.

Drifters don't buy new cars. Because you can have a better car for less.

People that are drifting their 86 are one of the following...
Bought an 86 then decided to do drifts
Already have a drift car, bought the 86 as a daily, and skid it anyway
Bought an 86 to specially prep it for drift.

All three possibilities are massive minorities.

I need a Spock meme that says "Fascinating" right about now... haha

Guess I am a minority then, because I only want one of these things to pitch it sideways.
All my other toys are domestic and while awesome, just aren't as nimble and flick-able as these things.

So what prior experience do you have with drifting. What cars of your own have you specifically set up to do so?

I never built a dedicated drift car so far. That's why I want to add this thing.
Cars I have drifted that were also serving other purposes... Oh, that's a bit of a list. lol
Some of the more interesting ones are a 64 Tempest and a C4 Vette.
Come to think of it, one of my E30s was pretty much drift only.

Still, never anything with an aftermarket geared towards the sport.

Yup. Daily driver that I'm learning car control for grip and drift on. Hell of a lot safer to learn car control on a new car that's pretty slow and tame compared to like a supra/camaro/etc that has a lot of power for its grip.

I think learning how to drift on a low hp platform is a must.
Way to many power-over-fishtailing "drifters" out there anyway. LOL

Disagree.

Its much safer to drift with more power. It gives you alot more flexibility.

Drifting the 86, you have to push the car quite hard. And it certainly has more mechanical grip than a supra/silvia (and although Ive never driven a camaro, I doubt they have a lot of grip either)

The 86 has a heap of grip and naff all power. Its the hardest FR car to drift that I've owned. I certainly wouldnt recommend learning in it. Better to get a 4 door skyline/cefiro/laurel, which are much less snappy, and much easier to learn in. That said, if you don't have the option but to learn in the 86, then go for it. Just means when you go to drive a Nissan whale, it'll be much easier.
