I'm having difficulties, 14K later, shifting smoothly from 1st to 2nd. Would this mod help me find the engagement point better or is it hopeless for me? I did learn to drive manual at 28, so that muscle memory you get as a youngin didn't kick in for me. However, I don't remember having this much trouble shifting in my last manual car.

Can't guarantee, but that was the shift that I struggled with the most. My wife even noticed how much smoother it was after removing the spring. I'd highly recommend.

Shifting issues with 2nd gear will not necessarily improve with this trick; it helps with all shifts. Have you replaced the factory transmission fluid?

Just did this and drive it only 2 miles so far, but I think I’m going to like it. It’s too early to tell for sure already, but I think I noticed smoother shifts and smoother revmatching on downshifts. Will test more tomorrow.

There is an additional portion to the clutch spring removal process that will help you with it - here's the link. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8040

Read most of this thread and removed the spring today. So much better. I can actually feel the engagement and drive much smoother.
I have ofh/oft, totally transformed the car, but doing the clutch adjustment and spring removal is right up there. Just makes the car so much better to drive and enjoy.

Just did mine today, and the most noticeable thing is that now that the spring assist is gone, I really notice how high up in the pedal travel the clutch engagement it. My pedal position hasn't changed, but I wish the engagement point was a lot lower. I do like the improved feedback though.

You can adjust the engagement point by loosening the nut behind the pedal and then adjusting the shaft.

That's just going to change pedal height, no? I don't want to reduce the pedal stroke necessarily - just move the engagement point closer to the floor.

It changes engagement point as well. There's a video on YT explaining which direction to turn the shaft in order to raise or lower the point (I can't remember on the top of my head).

Yeah, I saw that but got the impression that the net result would be different pedal height only. In order to change the clutch pedal engagement point, you'd have to change the position of the piston in the master cyl; I'll take a closer look at things and see how much adjustability is available...
