There are several possible reasons for this installation:

1. Experimentation/product development.
2. Practicing speeding in reverse.
3. The owner of the car has minimal driving experience and is trying to 'prove' something to his bimbette girlfriend.
4. Did not follow installation instructions and will soon get a Big Surprise.
5. THe driver also puts his pants on backwards (see post #17) and can hardly walk let alone drive.
6. The drive doesn't know the difference between reverse lift, forward lift, up force/down force, as well as oversteer/understeer, toe-in/toe-out..

The problem with what the guy has done here is that the design of that wing utilizes a basic airfoil (thicker at the leading edge and tapered to the trailing edge, similar to an airplane wing. To generate lift, the top of the airfoil is usually curved at a higher rate toward the leading edge and straightening out as it moves aft while the bottom is usually flat or concave. As air moves over the airfoil, it creates an area of low-pressure on top of the and an area of high-pressure below. This results in "lift".

Now on car-wings, this airfoil is inverted with the flat or concave surface on the top and the curved area on the bottom. This is how reverse-lift or "down force" is generated. The amount of "down-force" can be adjusted by altering the angle of the wing in relation to the air-flow. This is known as the "angle of attack". While down force can be increased in this manner (by tilting the front of the wing down), it also increases drag.

What this IDIOT has done by reversing the wing is render the airfoil backwards. This completely negates the aerodynamic properties of the design and increases drag. If you notice the little "lip" on the trailing edge of the wing, it is disturbing the airflow over the top of it to create an extremely turbulent, low-pressure area above the wing. So unless he were to compensate by tilting it dramatically, his wing is generating considerable drag while generating a little lift.

Scott
I AM an aerospace engineer.

And this post pretty much has all the right points. At that AoA it'll likely be producing some lift just from Newton's 3rd law. The air going under the wing is hitting that bottom surface and being deflected downwards (probably) so the wing is going to be pulling up on the trunk

Now, with that lip at the front of the wing and that AoA, it's 99% guaranteed flow is separating as soon as it hits the leading [trailing ] edge. So that's going to create a TON of drag.

Makes good sense, but biggest issue I see is that it is angled downwards.

Sadly, I wouldn't be too surprised if this was part of Scion's new 10 Series FR-S.

"In addition to the illuminated Scion logos in the front, rear, door sills, dashboard, and shift knob, we have now added a reverse spoiler for the ultimate in brand identification - now standard on all 10 Series Scion models."

Ugh...

The biggest problem I have with this is not the fact that it may generate some lift (I doubt it's more than 50 kg at highway speeds) but the potential for decreased rear end stability under braking and cornering. Now that would be dangerous if it makes an already tail happy but balanced car even more likely to fishtail.

since we're talking aerospace, thought i'd chime in for fun (my background is in aerospace). without seeing the actual cross section of the wing, i find it hard to draw a conclusion (besides the wing looking like it'll add drag) as to whether it's lifting or pushing down on the back of the car. the wing basically looks like a deep camber airfoil. but put on backwards, i'm not sure what that would actually do.

as for angle of attack, we can't assume that the direction of airflow is the same as the direction of travel of the car, because the air follows the contour of the top of the car and it may actually be hitting the front of the wing without a negative angle of attack.

so, performance-wise, i think it's hard to draw a definitive conclusion without more info. but, i think we all agree that the owner probably made a mistake and it looks stupid

His is facing the proper way. Still ungodly big for what his car has under the hood...

It did not take long at all for this to happen
