Because it was what they had and I couldn't wait any longer!! Ok, this is only partially true, but it helps that it does look good too. I would have waited for Argento had it been a plain white, but the Pearl does it.

The real reason Whiteout is so popular is because of Apple. At least according to some dude from BMW, as referenced in a Motoramic article.

The article is mostly about Brown being the hot colour, so to save all the TL/DR people, the relevant part is reproduced below for your convenience.

According to Sandy McGill, BMW Designworks' lead designer in color, materials, and finish, this is Steve Jobs' doing. "Prior to Apple, white was associated with things like refrigerators or the tiles in your bathroom. Apple made white valuable."

I was told by a Subaru tech that their white ends up yellowing over time. Originally looked into this color but after that I didn't want to risk it looking like that in a few years and went with asphalt.

I agree w/Jay Leno in the vid... I have always owned black cars, and would've probably bought black in this car, if it didn't have so many sparkles in the damn paint!!!!! I like my cars BLACK.

Thank being said, white has grown on me over the past few years. I would've preferred a pure white, just as I like black, but it was really about settling on white with sparkles, over black w/sparkles... LOL.

(and yes I know they're not called "sparkles")

Ive always had a thing for white cars. The 05 sti with gold bbs is sunken into my head and have always wanted a white car after i saw one. After seeing all the colors, the other colors i would pick are firestorm and hot lava. The lighter colors bring out the black trim in the front end nicely.

Took the words right out of my mouth! im also not a fan of pearl. If it was just white i would have gone with it over red. the only thing holding me back from red is that it almost looks faded when seeing it in the sun (in pictures) not too sure if this is fact because i havent seen one in the sun yet. sighhhh

My 2 cents:

1. Neutral color. Easy for resale.
2. Hides dirt and swirls well. My black FD needs a wash every weekend. My pearl white SC300 can go 2-3 months without a wash. Each time it rains here in FL, the SC300 won't have to be washed for at least another month.
3. It's the new VIP color. VIP style used to stay with black only. Now you can get away with VIP mods such as deep dish rims, window curtains, wood cup holders and trims with white paint and look baller.
4. White. It has all the colors. True story.

My 240 hatch is black and my 240 convertible is white. The vert appears flawless until you look at with closely with a flashlight down the side of the car. Then you notice its door dented everywhere. My hatch is close to MINT, except one small dent in the rear quarter panel....and its always the thing i see, people see and that is why my FRS is white.

Correct white (ie. Polar white, natural white, super white) has been used in the past on sports cars (pre-2005 more so).

FR-S is a pearl white, totally different ( not just in my perspective). Any white has a high albedo (which is a good thing in that it reflects light, and won't make your car (interior) too hot.

The only thing pearl white that I've seen in person that I like tends to be certain luxury cars ( Lexus SC400 , LS , etc), Genesis sedan, etc. To me, pearl denotes luxury, not so much sport. SC300 or 400 = sport coupe , yes but with gold emblems , pearl white paint they can look sexy. The interior, and much of the car still resonates luxury more so then sport.

It's not a "look at me" color, so old farts like me like it.
