The school I got out of was pretty small and focused on a ton of the core information. Didn't hurt that my DS professor was german and the information systems / parallel professor was chinese. Very detail oriented people, and taught me a ton.

Granted, a lot of people got caught up on their mastery of english and chose not to pay them any attention.

I graduated about 2 and a half years ago though, and the program is slowly changing more and more....I just hope they don't go too soft. CS should be 'hard', and should have a lot of information.....not how to be a code monkey.

My biggest problem with people taking CS is when they approach me saying "I want to learn how to program"..... That statement in and of itself tells me that it's not the right field for you. CS isn't just typing stuff on a screen and making the computer do things. But people seem to think it is. *sigh*

And I thought Algorithm and Data Structure is a must-have course in CS field. These are the basis of all the programming languages...

Definitely agree.

I also think understanding parallel computing and how the OS manages your threads is important as well. Understanding why you should consider locking and things of that nature, as well as why you'd want to put things on other threads in the first place. Fortunately that side of computing is becoming much easier, libraries that assist in thread management and getting your callbacks to execute where you want them to.

I really don't even understand how people function without understanding choices in data structures. Sure, you generally aren't going to sit down and decide to hash something, but at least understanding that any collection with which you can access elements directly via a key is different from something like a link list or otherwise seems important.

Isn't it nowadays that people use UML to craft complex software system first before spearheading to coding or something? With that higher level of abstraction, people should first understand what/how the data structure is formed and the algorithms to be used before the actual coding. It is like knowing what you are going to write *before* actually write it.

Being a perl guy nowadays, what I do know is hash table, and hash of hash is really fun to maintain and use.
