This may hold true for Toyota trim levels but not here in the US with Scion. Let's see what Scion announces for prices and which will be standard equipment and which will be options. :happy0180:

Problem with comparing something like a Camry (Japan vs. US) would be that the Camry has a lot of stuff built in the US, while the FRS is entirely built in Japan if I'm not mistaken. Since the exchange rates are changing a lot you can't just compare prices of old Japan made cars, you'd have to take the Japanese price, subtract taxes (which I am having trouble figuring out :/ it looks like in Japan there is at least 1000 dollars extra worth of tax from what I'm seeing), and then take into consideration typical shipping cost, and then US import tax.

May be a bad comparison, but FJ Cruiser in Japan is around 40k, while it starts around 27k in the U.S.

I hope they keep it simple and decently equipped around 26k.

An exceprt from that article posted earlier in this thread about the Camry costing more in Japan:

In fact, Toyota says none of its newest Camry models—the seventh generation of the line—will be exported from Japan to North America (3,200 were exported in 2010.) At the same time, Toyota expects to sell only 500 to 1,000 Camry models a month in Japan, which accounted for less than 1% of the car’s global sales of 692,000 vehicles last year.
That stands in stark contrast to the U.S., which accounts for 52% of the global market for Camry models. Higher volumes at its Camry factory in Georgetown, Kentucky, allows Toyota to spread out fixed costs over more cars, thereby reducing the average price per vehicle.

ZERO Camrys are imported from Japan to US. MOST of the world's Camrys are built in Kentucky. That's why it costs more in Japan. The FR-S is made in GUNMA. This point is moot for the FR-S. The FR-S being assembled in Japan is a factor that makes it cheaper in the JDM and drives MSRP in America UP, not down.

Valid points... how about the Lexus CT200H, I'm pretty sure it's manufactured in Japan. You're right the Camry is almost 100% North American.

Lexus CT200h

Japan: 3.55 Million Yen ($46000)
Canada: $30950
USA: $29120

I don't think where it was built matters. FJ's were built in Japan last time I checked, but does have much higher price tag in Japan. Funny thing is FJs came to the US in 2006, while Japan recently got it.

I do not believe in direct price conversions using the currency exchange rates at all. For one thing, I cannot name one Japanese car that is not sold significantly cheaper here in the US than in Japan regardless where it is made in Japan or in North America. Also, remember our Dutch friend informed us that the GT86 would be sold for around 40,000 Euro? However, as a publicly traded corporation, I am pretty sure Toyota is very consious about the break even point and profitability.

One piece of information I should have added when I started this thread is that the publicized prices are actually significantly higher than what the enthusiasts in Japan were expecting (somewhat similar to the general ballpark consensus we have here). Is that necessarily a bad thing? I do not know. If you read into it too much, you could come up with a theory that it is Toyota's preemptive move to cover the anticipated losses to sell the same products cheaper in the US and other foreign markets. Who knows. All I can say is that the pricing efforts are all entangled at a global level and this must be one heck of a problem for Toyota to resolve.
