Interesting that he said they had the convertible in mind right from the beginning, bcoz I thought I read elsewhere that they weren't going to do convertible and AWD when they were designing/engineering this car in the early days. Maybe I read wrongly....

So i guess BMW wants at either one of these:
- Toyota's hybrid/plugin tech for i3/i8.
- GT86 platform for a new Z2 roadster (below the Z4) or for a Triumph brand revival.

And Toyota wants BMW carbon fiber chassis know-how.

Looks like the BMW 1 series three door.

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicle...oom/index.html

I was just on vacation in London and Paris and the three door and five door 1 series was everywhere. My wife totally wants the five door and I support her in that.

I couldn't even consider it. Twice the insurance and absolute crap gas mileage. On premium gas too! One or the other I could take, but not both.

Although, I don't want/need AWD so your mileage may vary. I'm positive about a sedan at least, but a hatchback would be stellar.

A 2-seater, on the same wheelbase as FR-S/BRZ but with engine/firewall/windshield/front-seaters moved aft about 2 ft. for 50/50 or better weight distribution. Add funky styling: instant modern 2000GT!
No sedans! No sedans ever! And no five door hatches! Three door hatch, two door coupe. ... and please don't make the Shooting Brake, Toyota, Or I'll buy it. I'll buy two. PLEASE DON'T.

You don't want them, so they shouldn't exist at all? Why not?

5-door hatch would allow us to replace wife's Mazda3 with a super-cool low-slung rwd car. That would be FANTASTIC! No one has offered this kind of car in the US since, what, the Datsun 510? Having 4-door and 5-door versions of that car did nothing to diminish its legendary status, btw...

Toyota has the best CFRP development in existence right now. For the LFA, they actually bought other manufactures CF technology and ended up scrapping it all to create their own because they felt it did not meet their standards.

And as I've said many times before, the Targa would be my only consideration to part with my my FR-S.
