Transmission not warmed up during a cold start in cold weather will cause a bit of notchiness. If you feel abnormal resistance, clutch and put it into neutral, and try again.

I just either put it into first then reverse, or just clutch in again.

No worries mate, i know you meant the low level Ozone (I hope you did ), which believe me it is worse for humans than cars. It could cause some serious damage to lungs, heart, etc. For a car not so much: there is enough concentration of O2 in the air to help the combustion in the engine so I am not overly worried about that!
