For Canadian owners: alarms are provided on both models. Per the specs on the SOC site, both have the following :
Quote:
Security: Anti-theft system
Security: Engine immobilizer system
Security: Keyless entry system with panic alarm

[QUOTE=Porsche;748159]Then I suspect that your alarm system is NOT activated.

"The initial flashing merely indicates that the Engine Immobilizer is activated. This system is on all cars, with or without the Subaru alarm.

If the alarm system is ON, then AFTER locking the car, the red lock symbol in the instrument cluster will light STEADILY for 30 seconds, NOT flashing, following locking the car. After this initial 30 seconds, then the lock symbol will begin flashing.

Obviously, this requires visual confirmation following locking the car.

One way to test your alarm to confirm that it is ACTIVATED and ON is to open a window, close the doors, lock the car, remove the key from the vicinity of the car so it is no longer sensed by the car, then return to the car, reach through the open window and unlock the car and open the door. If your alarm is activated, the alarm should sound. If not, then the alarm has not been set.

The "trick" to activating the alarm system is to open the door IMMEDIATELY after first pressing the UNLOCK button. Any delay will result in a failed attempt to set the alarm."

You were right. Re did it while opening the door immediately like you said and heard the honk and saw Al On this time in the dash...

Ok...you can do this buddy!

Sit in the car.
Close all doors (and keep unlock).
Put ignition On (engine not running and all lights on in the dash).
Hold the switch "the unlock door switch" on the driver's door (like you want to unlock the doors) AND
simultaneously (meaning right now) open the driver's door (with your other hand) while STILL holding the unlock button switch...and wait till you hear the honk and see "Al-On" in your dash (bottom of RPM display).

Should work if you do it fast. If not just retry.

Let us know...

I thought that I'd activated the alarm months ago because I followed the procedure in the manual and heard the horn beep. However, I'd never seen the interior lights go on when I approached the car, nor had I seen the red lock light stay solid on for 30 seconds. This thread got me thinking about it, and I went ahead and used your instructions rather than the manual and voila! I read "al on" in the readout and now the interior light comes on when approaching the vehicle, and the lock light stays solid red for 30 seconds before blinking. Thanks! Curious to see if the OP had the same result.

I just got my BRZ today! I activated the alarm, but noticed that the indicator light with the lock superimposed on a car continuously flashes when the alarm isn't set. Is this normal?

I'm a bit confused. Is this button dance thing the same as the dealer activating the alarm? Or does the dealer have to activate it, then the user/owner has to turn it on doing this?

It's one or the other. Either the dealer already activated it, or you follow these steps to do it yourself. In my case, I had to do it myself.

Mine wasn't activated when I got it either. I wouldn't mind the flashing light when the alarm is armed. But it appears that the light flashes when the alarm isn't armed. I'd prefer no light if it's not active...
