UPDATE:

It has been confirmed that the IS300 doesn't come with a final drive of 4.55. I just got off the line with the Lexus parts department in my area....

What I have learned:

The IS300 and IS250 have different differentials as well as different axles. There is no way both of them will bolt on to the 86. It would have to be one or the other as they bolt up differently and have different axles.

Also, even if one did fit, they never came with a 4.55 final drive, at least not in the USA.

Seems that my dreams of an easy swap have been destroyed. Carry on....

No worries. I personally think this is one of the best mods if youre staying NA.

If you switch to a 4.55 FD, won't that lower the shift points on your car? For example, let's say I am on a track with the stock FD and I come up to a corner that I can take with an entry speed of around 55 mph and an exit speed of about 50 mph after i pass the apex. With the stock setup I would take that corner in second gear because my shift point is 59 mph. With a 4.55 FD I would probably have a second gear shift point around 50 mph. With the stock FD I can accelerate faster out of the corner in second gear then I would if I had to exit that corner in 3rd gear with a 4.55 FD because my stock second gear is still more aggressive than a 4.55 FD 3rd gear. Granted, I'll have to up shift into third shortly after I pull out of that corner, at which point the 4.55 FD will have the advantage in acceleration because his 3rd gear is better than mine.

But the point is that wouldn't the optimal final drive have to depend on the track you are racing at?

in "theory" yes but the reality is on the track carrying speed is FAR more important than the acceleration in a LOWER (mph limiting) gear only, as you cited, to have to upshift( loss of time) shortly there after. So the overall shorter FD allows for an easier gear to be pushed. When I reviewed my in car at MY track its win win for my lap times. I think a SHORTER FD than the 4.55 for ME at MY track would cause for an extra shift in 3 points on the lap.

The other thing is and I see it in my students for the last 15 years, is the tendency to buzz around in the lower gears which makes the car MUCH more jerky when you lift a hair which causes weight transfer and loose handling. Its better to commit to the taller gear and put your foot down and save a shifter later when its possible.

At 2200 lbs its sick !

I was taught the same. Use the highest gear you can in a corner without falling took far out of the power band. The corner speed is more important than the exit unless you are setting hot laps And really need the accel. In reality less shifting And smoother braking is more important for avg lap time. Depends on where You are And What You drive too. It's not a black And white kinda skill. You figure It out with enough seat time And trying corners different ways.

My WRX was at 3500-4000 by 65-70MPH...it was hellish. 3" turboback and straight through muffler. Sounded glorious, but the drone...never again!
