AT Transsmision as the others say. My engine cranks like its right in the middle of the summer even at -20c.

10 minutes of warm up is way excessive and it's just burning money. Once the idle rpms of the engine reaches normal operatinging RPMS around 800-1000 the oil has circulated enough. If it's that cold, the rest of the driveline might have frosted over. Best to start it moving after 2-3 minutes of getting the oil going.

The first start on a cold morning is by far the most harmful thing an engine sees and there's really no way around that. Any other regular engine (barring redlining it and choking it like a chicken) wear and tear will be a small fraction of first start wear and tear.

I know anything over 30 seconds is a waste but i am guilty of letting it sit for 5 minutes on cold mornings, and man i love that crunch sound everytime i open the door, sounds so nice on a brand new car....

I don't know about an AT but with a MT most of the gears are spinning in the transmission when the shift is in neutral and the clutch is released.

The spinning gears will stir the oil and genetrate some heat. How much not sure.

I had no problems today at 7:30am in NJ. I let it warm up for 30 seconds before I drove to work.

Yes that's true, but not nearly as much as the heat generated by the frictional losses that comes with power transmission...by driving the car. It's the same thing as letting the engine idle, yes that will eventually warm up, but in the end your brakes, bearings, & differential can't get warm until you drive the car.

I had some issues starting up last night after work. It was 13 degrees Fahrenheit and took 3 turns of the key to finally fire up.

Get an Optima battery. It will solve all your issues.

I've noticed that after driving through the hills in cold weather, it seems as if the car seems to lose power. It'll take longer to hit the higher RPMs and just feels sluggish overall. This is usually accompanied by difficulty starting up or very weak start-ups. Does anyone else have this problem?

It's funny you say that. I have one of those small racing battery kits that I've used for about 3yrs now and the last two winters were here in Mass with zero issues. So far this week has been well below 20degrees and start ups have been quick and on the first try.

+1

I drive a Manual Impreza winter beater and have to let the car warm up first. Even when the motor is blazing hot, if the transmission oil is cold then the revs will be high and the shifting would feel a bit sluggish.

My 98 Honda Civic AT, however, does not suffer from this problem so it must be a Subaru thing???

How exactly do you achieve this? Accelerating while not under load?
