I hope you can get a factory rack, they fit better than the thurl aftermarket types.

I very much doubt my mountain bike will fit in the car, that parcel shelf looks pretty low and as I'm a one-car kinda guy I'm going to be needing a roof rack.

You and the truck guy are missing the point. I have 0 desire to drive a truck or suv, ever. I don't need or want AWD, the weight it comes with or the decreased fuel economy. I want a small, light RWD car that meets my (albiet strange) requirements. The 86 currently meets ALL of my requirements, and the only thing stopping my from going and putting a deposite down is the knowledge of a roof rack option. I want to maximize my time driving this sweet car. I don't want anything bigger than absolutely necessary.

I'm with the OP. My purchase of this car will primarily hinge on if I am able to fit my road bike in the trunk with the seats folded down. I currently have a roof rack on my E46 M3 but I don't know if the aesthetics of a roof rack would work on the FR-S.

Just reminds me of this:

Listen, it is your car. Do what you want, but I personally would not do that. Just looks weird to me. Can you transport your bike or skis this way? Sure. But I personally wouldn't do it. Good luck, hopefully you'll find something.

this whole one dimensional idea on what a car should/shouldn't be used for is purely an American phenomenon. go most other westernized places in the world (primarily Europe) and people use cars for EVERYTHING. and yes, Porsche is very well known for providing external transport solutions straight from the factory on their cars. no reason Subaru/Toyota won't/shouldn't do the same for this car.

Anyone know if this thing is going to have factory roof rack points? I assume they would be under the weather stripping like typical subaru rack points, so someone want to go peek under that weather stripping for me?!? I imagine it'll be difficult to use an aftermarket "around the roof / in the door" rack with the door / roof design of the 86.

No one makes one for the 370z for this very reason (except boofsquire, but that one wraps around the hatch)
As others mentioned, this might not be the car for you then. I snowboard road bike and have a moto. I hated having to drive my Integra up to the resorts, dealing with snow chains etc. With your type of liftstyle, I highly suggest a truck, suv or a wagon! My Tacoma is such a versatile vehicle.

If not, this fellow plans to take advantage of the fold down seats with his roadie.

I only use the roof rack on our hatch when we take long trips/go skiing in the winter.

Roof rack is just not a fashion statement that should be made/used on the FRS.
Will kill those pretty lines on the car.

Bah! The FT86 will be my practical family car.

I'm going to install a roof rack for bikes as well.

You don't need a roof rack... fold down rear seats + skis = Win.

Unfortunately this doesn't solve the most frequent cases for me.

Fold down rear seats + large mountain bike = fail.
Fold down rear seats + dirty mountain bike = fail.
Fold down rear seats + dog + snowboard = fail.
etc.

Or like someone else said, long skis won't fit w/o entering the driver area, same with long snowboards.
