for the past day week and a half, ever since I got my car. I've drive 1000kms, i've been using Petro 91 since the first ime i pumped. I think im getting near 600kms from almost a tank of gas. I'm thinking of switching to Shell 91v-power after my current tank and see how it goes. I've been reading that ethanol within gasoline lowers milage but helps keep it cleaner. While vice verse non ethanol gas provides better milage but not as clean? Is this true or a myth? I personally wanna switch to Shell cuz I wanna save gas money, with MBNA smart cash and air miles, it should save me a lot more money than staying with petro n it's crummy points system imo...

I have been using Shell 91v-power since day one until that very convenient gas station closed down and have since used Chevron 94 (no Ethanol) for about 4 tank fills.

I have noticed a slight power gain, but that is probably partly to do with the colder weather this time of year. My mileage is about the same with mostly rural and some city driving.

V-power is a highly additivized fuel with probably some of the best cleanliness additives on the market. The way these additives are added to the fuel may also contribute to improved lubricity contributing to fewer observations of crickets.

I know I bet slightly better mileage on shell 91 than petro 91 or 94, but don't feel a difference in power. Since ethanol makes less power per given volume and higher octane burns slower, I'd be shocked if the stock tune makes more power on petro 94 over shell 91.

Yes, you'll lose power if you run too low of octane, but if it's not knocking you don't generally gain any power going to a higher octane without adjusting the tune to take advantage of it.

As for difference in cost, it's about 3-5 cents more for 94 over 91 which is about $2 / tank max.
Yes we did dynoed it up here in quebec and the result were 5whp more with 94oct. and for the cricket I get it with both gaz so I use Petro Canada

Thanks for confirming what my butt dyno felt. I don't notice much difference in the cold weather, but in the middle of summer I do. When it is hot out, I find that a quick blip of the throttle in preparation for a downshift to pass someone, I get 1 sharp snap of ping (presumably the computer then pulls some timing). This is pretty consistant with the 91. With 94, it rarely happens. I don't have much faith in "octane-in-a-bottle" additives, but I have found one that works. When I'm running 91 plus a bottle of this stuff, that ping that I hear on a throttle blip is not there... http://www.lucasoil.com/products/dis...show&headTitle= - Lucas Octane Booster. I think it was a MazdaSpeed forum where I first read about this stuff, and it is one of only 2 or 3 octane boosters that actually seem to do anything other than lighten your wallet. This stuff is about $12 a bottle and upgrading to 94 from 91 is only about $2 a tank (4 cents/litre X 50 litres).
Straight 94 gives me crickets...I've tried the 2-stroke trick, and it works.

For those of you getting 400 - 600+ kms per tank ... how much of it is Highway, and is your car MT or AT?

For some reason I'm only getting 320-380 kms per tank. (filling up as soon as the light goes on, on the higher end)

I drive ALL city, mostly traffic, and lots of stop lights. Could have an effect?

this should be obvious, but you get better fuel economy on the highway.

stop and go, red light to red light will give you the worst possible fuel economy.

I'm about 75% 2 lane rural roads/highways and 25% city driving. Car is MT and I usually get 400+ KMs to about 3/4 of a tank per week.

I just put a near full tank of vpower 91. I feel a significant difference from putting 91 at petro. The shifting is less jerky, i might be a lil bias bc i've been using petro for so long that something new might unintentionally feel btr. Though i do feel a btr push and flow during acceleration. Petro 91 for me seemed very "airy"? Im gonna try 94 for my next tank and see wut happens from there.

5whp gained on the stock tune with no difference other than 94 octane vs 91 octane? No offense, but I call BS on that. That's a bigger gain than most exhausts.

I would believe you could gain 5whp by adjusting the tune to take advantage of the higher octane, but on the stock tune I see no way you're gaining 5whp from higher octane unless you were running less than 91 on the first runs.

i do mostly city driving myself, 400 a tank is my average

if you're doing 320 that means you've got a heavy foot and accelerate too hard in lower gears.

try not racing and coast in gear when coming up to lights rather than clutching or riding in neutral
