Doh...I saw the upper wing as the tail, which immediately made the lower one look like something completely different. NOW I see them....

I used to fuel those things up and wonder just how the hell those tiny little wings kept them in the air. Although I must confess that the F-104 worried me a bit more with their little stubs and I always stayed hunkered down in the ready bunker when they were landing.

If I recall correctly the F104 and the Phantom both have a power off glide ratio of about 3:1 (for every 1ft of altitude lost it moves forward 3 feet) so basically both of them fly more on thrust than lift. The wings just provide stability and control.

In comparison a B747 has a glide ratio of 15:1 so from 30,000ft it can glide almost 100 miles with no power, versus 15 miles for an F-4.
