Hey, the I-5 is great! There's a billboard that says CALL YOUR MOTHER. And... Um.

To be a good investment, IMO, a car needs to meet Top Gear's criteria: It has to be rare, beautiful, and interesting. To be a good investment, a classic car must be well-loved, scarce, and yours must be better than 95-99% of them.

My grandpa just replaced everything on his Z32. It's a yellow, manual, 2-seater with 12,000 miles on the clock. Still smells like a new car. Suck it Trebec!

I'm deeply upset that I'll never own an NSX. W10 MR2s started appreciating a while back, they probably cost S2000 money now. S2000 is an okay investment in my book, RX-8 is better. Lancer Evo Xs will always be worthless, but I think 2010 Saab 9-5 has potential. And Volkswagen Type 3s cost amazingly little, surely that can't last much longer? Taurus SHO are completely worthless now, but I bet they'll appreciate decently. Merkur, SVO, Super Coupe, GLH-S. The FR-S will become the Eagle Talon of 2030.

Here's my question: What will come of the Civic Si?

Does anybody know how much it costs to get a good tune done to your car? Is it cheaper or pricier to do the ecutek tune? I've been really wanting to do one to my car but everything just seems so expensive. I've looked at the OFT but Idk if that's reliable.

Oft is reliable. The difference between EcuTek and oft is that EcuTek is a one time tune where as oft you can tune back to stock or other options hundred times over

There are A LOT of people using OFT. It's been proven to be pretty reliable as long as you don't flash the wrong tune for you car (running Stage2 with no mods...). OFT is much cheaper and uses off the shelf tunes. You can also modify them yourself if you want. You can easily switch back to stock or another tune at no extra cost. The resale value is pretty good as well if you decide to go another direction.

Ecutek on the other hand is more expensive and requires a tuner to create a custom tune for you car. This usually results in better performance vs OFT. The tuner has more control and can tune the car to your needs. Unlike OFT, you cannot transfer your EcuTek license to another vehicle nor can you go back to stock easily. Getting a retune can cost extra as well if you add more mods or decide to go FI.

Most people go OFT for the cost and ease of use while staying NA. If you go the FI route, you'll need to get EcuTek. I don't know of anyone running OFT with a turbo or supercharger... or if it's even possible to do so safely.

As far as cost, OFT is $400-$500 depending if you get it through OFT or used. EcuTek can cost upwards of $1000-$2000 as you have to buy the license, cable, and have someone create the tune.

Thanks for the responses guys, really appreciate it. I guess it might be time to pick up an OFT for my next mod. I recently ordered the 1320 uel headers and overpipe from their website. I'll probably get a drop in air filter and then tune my ride.

Hey!

So this year I'm looking to buy my first car, which is prooobably going to be a FRS/BRZ.

I'm located in the south bay and I'd love to test drive + find a decent dealer to start figuring out where I'll get it.

Any recommendations? I know people have mentioned similar things around these forums before but thought I'd see if you guys have more recent opinions.

I was leaning toward certified pre-owned, but looks like subaru may not sell any of that so I'd have to go FRS.

But on the other hand I'm considering brand new, it just means my price range jumps up a bit.

What do you guys think?

Also what are things like around the south bay in terms of meetups? I've never gone to a car meetup before but I know people who have and they always seem fun. Since I'll probably go with an automatic rather than stick shift would I get any bad looks? lol.

If I was you I'd personally wait until the 2017 toyota 86 comes out in a couple months if you want toyota branding. If you want subaru then go for that. But price range, a lot of frs from the dealership usually retail for the same depending on miles. 30-40k usually lie somewhere around 19k. Low miles like 20k is probably around 20. And 10k or less usually costs about 21k and up. If your looking for pre-owned those are some options. As for subarus those are usually more expensive than the frs. The dealerships are usually unconvincable to bring the price down probably because it's a sports car and they just want top dollar, at least was in my case. I got my frs fom our state capital at a Dodge dealership. As for looks at car meet, I went to one in elk Grove, and nobody judged. Everyone has their personal taste. I drive a AT tranny and personally I love it, makes my life easy.

Has the release date for the 86 been confirmed yet? I did some light Googling and best I could see was maybe late Fall this year?

Thanks for the great advice! Trying to figure out if it's better just to go new, in which case waiting for the 86 would probably be worth it? My plan currently is to start seriously looking around July, though I won't necessarily be able to actually buy until probably early September-ish.

edit: also if I did decide to wait, then the question is I'd need to compare with the 2017 BRZ as well I guess D:

Anyone who will give you crap for the AT has probably never actually driven one and doesn't understand the concept of a really terrible commute.

I'm too old to deal with a clutch and shifting in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic. I have a hella a lot of fun with my paddles and I do not in any way feel like I sacrificed too much to have something I can pop into automatic when shifting is just not convenient.

Otherwise, I pretty much always use mine in manual mode anyway.

Haters are gonna hate. Don't let them get to you.
