So which GoPro should I get for xmas? Is there really a reason to get the black over the silver? Who has one and can give some insight?

I've got the silver and I'm really happy with it. All the fancy features in the black seemed nice to have, but for another $100 and for what I really was using it (personal documenting instead of fancy production grade) the silver was plenty. I really did want that higher-speed(slower-mo? Slower slo-mo? Lol) feature the black had, 240 fps vs 120 on the silver.

That's kind of what I figured, the higher resolution and slo-mo capabilities are a nice-to-have, but in the end it will just end up making larger files, which means a bigger memory card, longer processing times, more HD space, etc.

All I really care about is the better light capabilities and the ability to adjust the camera view using your phone. Glad that you have the silver, since your video is what convinced me I wanted a new one.

Haha, yeah, coming from a Hero 1, a Hero 3 just blew it out of the water. I think I would have been even happy with a white since my standards are so low. What really sold me was the wifi+app, no more guessing if the camera is pointed right and no more running out and hitting record (if the camera is mounted outside). Battery life could still use some improvement though...

I just got the hero 3+ black edition. The app doesn't work when you raise clarity too high. But then again this is my first gopro.

Do you mean the app doesn't work at all or the live preview? If you have the camera set to a certain mode (I forgot what, the super detailed setting one) it turns off live view when you are recording but should still have a preview when you are not.

Yeah, the preview is still there but when you record. You don't know if it's still facing the right way or not when you have it in your hand.

I have the Black and it's got the remote and better low light sensor than the Silver. If that matters then get the Black. But in my opinion for what I use it for (driving and track vids, occasional photos and time lapse) the silver would have probably been fine. Not sure about Android but for ios there is an app you can use as a remote instead.

@PMok figured you'd appreciate this, even though you have a W30

I love these petrolicious vids, always awesome composition with good stories/interviews to go with it(unfortunately, just not that crazy about this interviewee). Makes me think we are gonna feel the same way a few years from now.
