Other than being quieter this is false. ZIIs have better cold grip and rain grip.

I guess they got cheaper. Honestly the RE11 is garbage compared to the ZII and RS3. All of the RE11s used to be around $200/tire.

I paid $176 for 255/40/17 ZIIs but I think I am going back to RS3s next time. I've already burned 3 sets of RS3s off the FR-S.

If you're not going to be doing tons of events and want a good all around DD with some track duty tire, get the re11a. I love mine, perfect for DD, not too noisy, good in the wet, and great on the track as well. But that's just me.

Maybe if he is competing in Autocross or on the track they won't match lap times... But by no means are they a "garbage" tire.

Well I think the ZIIs do as well at street tasks as the RE11 and you just admitted it's better in extreme performance applications. Maybe the ZIIs will get louder quicker like the ZIs did. We'll see I don't have enough miles on my 255 ZIIs yet. Regardless like I've said before I'm going back to 245 Hankook RS3s anyway.

To fair RE11s are NOT garbage. They are the most comfortable tire in a class filled with uncomfortable tires (including the RE11) But I'd pick ZIIs 10/10 times for someone who wants a tire out of that category but sees mostly street.

I have the RE11s on my Lexus IS and they are a good tire -- at the time I bought them they weren't cheap but they were one of the stickier tires available. This was for a DD use and for that they work fine, though I think they are a tad noisy. That wasn't a huge issue for me I just kind of figured the noise goes with the territory of the higher performance tires. But it's amazing how quickly tire technology evolves, and how newer tires outperform old designs. What was once the pinnacle of the performance tire world 3 years ago, is now just an OK tire LOL.

I think most people will feel that just about any "summer" or "performance" tire will outperform the stock all-season Michelins. So really if you're not taking it to the track or autox regularly, perhaps any tire we've discussed will do just fine for a DD, find one with the price and tread life you like. If grip/performance is really important to you then yes take a closer look at the RS3, ZII and Rival -- they are simply the top choices by many of the people who do track and autox so they have good reps and lots of logged miles.

Truth! To add to the underlined part, if you NEVER plan to do an autoX or track event. DON'T buy a tire from the UHP (Ultra High Performance 140-200TW) category where the ZIIs, RS3s and RE11s sit. Go down to MPS (Max Performance Summer 240-300TW). This is where Hankook V12, Michelin Pilot Super Sport, and Falken 453 hang out.

I'm running the Falken 453s on my DD wheels in 245/40/17 on 17x9 and I really like them. They got loud but not until right before the end of their life which I like. Rain grip is excellent compared to ANY UHP tire. The think I like the most is they are NON-directional so they can be roated from left to right on the car also for even more life. I got about 20K on mine right now and they've got maybe another 5-6K on them before I replace them. You'll only get 12-15K out of a UHP tire.
