Racism is thinking another race/culture is inferior to yours. Marketing is realizing that different races/cultures prefer different things.

I'm EuroAfricanMiddle-eastern. Where does that put me in?

More speculation:
My hopes are that they see a decrease in the relevance of ethnicity.
Really, if I think about it, what could they possibly do from a marketing perspective that wouldn't alienate one group or another?
I don't know if it's really based on where they want to focus on marketing alone.
There's probably a lot more to it than that. Or not.
So, they get an idea of what type of human is interested in buying the car.

Really, who gives a shit, why get all bent out of shape about it. We're all gonna be brown eventually....

Even in job applications when questioned by my ethnicity I simply state I prefer not to disclose as that information is completely optional and biased.

WTF does your/our ethnic group have to do with what we choose to drive? Age, ok, income, sure....but ethnicity? Who gives a @#$% who buys your products? As long as you buy, should be the focus.

Needless to say I replied "HUMAN!" If that's not good enough for "them" perhaps I'll have to find something else made from a competitor to drive/support.

Before the call ended, I told the young man "you'd better have "them" fix that!

I fail to see why the OP is upset; This is how most major companies conduct their market research. Don't get offended by it; It just is. You can always reserve your right to not answer.

Bottom line is if they don't get that question answered you end up paying more for your car... So answer it and be nice not everyone is obsessed with cars, some people its just a j.o.b.

edit: people are getting reaaalllly anal lately, had a customer at work today say that if i had an internet technician come to his house to fix his lines, he'd "use his power of the 2nd amendment and shoot the man for trespassing" wtf!? ok man, ok. we wont give you internet. have fun w/ your dial up.

Well if that question offends you why not just offend the person asking it by saying "I don't know, why don't you ask your mom?"
