Not going to work. The car is designed to put the center of weight as low and as centered as possible. By putting weight in the trunk you are transferring weight to the outside therefore increasing the tendency of the car to spin outside of its natural axis of rotation. Either get rid of the sand or put it on the back seats, or passenger footwell where it is closer to the center of the car.

By the way, you can get General Altimax winter tires fairly cheaply, and they are highly rated.

Nice, I currently have my stock tires on my backseat. Since I don't use my backseat at all, i was plannign to keep them there for increased weight. Good idea? lol

If you can't afford snow tires, how were you able to afford the car?

I got now tires for 750 shipped from Tire rack, and that was with steel wheels to boot. The only downside is that I am sick and need to mount them for my holiday drive and that sucks.

If you live where it snows you need snow tires

All season = meh at everything and good at nothing

true but once you get traction the car with snow tires will stop faster than the one with all seasons

Some people cant afford to dump 600-1000 for tires in one shot. Im pretty sure he's financing like most of us who cant buy a car cash.

Ok but it's not like tires are an unexpected purchase. When you know you're going to need winter tires you set aside a little money and adjust your spending accordingly. That's what I did. I already planned for buying winter tires before the summer even began.. Poor planning on OP's part, nothing to add.

Long story short the only reason I got my frs when I did was because my outback was on its last leg and I did not want to spend the time effort and money fixing it just for something else to go wrong. So an expected expense like snow tires is all fine and dandy but like a few other people have said not everyone has 600-700$ they can just throw at some tires they'll only really need maybe once or twice a year. The car does fine on the roads even in the blizzard and honestly after looking at what I got stuck on vs what I drove through the only reason I had issues were because of a layer of black ice under the snow I couldn't see. Considering it was around 12" of snow and I've been hearing my also seasoned Subaru friends some with some without snow tires posting on Facebook about how difficult it is for them to get around I think actually this car did pretty well for what it is and I just took it a little too far out of it's comfort zone.

It's your car and your money. I think most of us are just trying to say that the extra bit of money spent on proper tires, is worth it for that one or two times a season you may need it to be safe (for you driving and others on the road).

I can't force anyone to wear their seatbelt either, but I would suggest it. Same deal.

I experienced the same thing way back when I bought a 1990 Miata; Stuck on a flat parking spot with the stock tires.

Put 4 Blizzack winter tires on that car and it turned into a snowmobile. A FUN RWD snowmobile. I hope the same can be said for the FRS I have.

To the person who insinuates that all seasons are as good or better than snow tires, forget it, you know not what you speak of. Plus last I checked, the stock tires that come on the twins are spectacularily low on traction in ANY condition

With these :

I had to try pretty hard to break traction/lose control in this:

The fun and safety is worth every penny ...not to mention I felt like there was more control with all the driving aids off.
