a snowmobile ,it ain't! who woulda thunk!
even (f.w.d.) cars that are too light aren't worth 2 sh**s in the snow! snow packs up under 'em,lifting the car right off the road, hence no traction! in any light weight "rear wheel drive" car, proper snow tires just to get around is critical. heavier (r.w.d.) cars do better, but ya still need good quality winter rubber...just sayin' |

The quoted list are some good starters. Really you just have to drive the car in the conditions/situation and get comfortable. You sort of already figured that out by going around the complex the other way. Think about your route home/to the store/etc. and figure out if there are any other places you might get stuck and plan how to get around them. Honestly...even if you have the best snow tires or a capable vehicle it's other people you have to worry about. |

I thought my BRZ was AWD. I had a guy come over when I was getting gas and he told me so.

I then proceeded to correct him as we were already talking about the car. It'll be a while before that ends lol. Definitely continue to find ways to get around OP, but don't expect too much out of those all seasons. I've seen plenty of cars have trouble with those conditions, granted I've generally only seen it while on trips so odds are those people are even less prepared for the snow than you. Maybe there was ice? That certainly wouldn't promote any traction.

I live up on a mountain but commute down to an elevation where snow doesn't fall. So I only need winter grip for like 2 miles of my commute. Right now, the FR-S is in the garage until I decide on snow tires or (more likely) tire chains. We are allowed (and in fact often required) to use them up here. Once I get down below the snow line, I can take them off and drive like normal.
I know the car's manual discourages the use of cables/chains, but I have used very low-profile THULE brand chains before on other cars and had no problems. Anyone else use tire chains or cables in the snow with this car? |

Drove my Cobalt SS in the snow a few times. It was fun until I started spinning. And then it kept being fun, so I bought RWD

You should check out my post in the Ottawa FRS section about my experience this Sunday on the first snow. (Since roads weren't salted/cleared yet)
It was horrible. My car was swerving when and spinning when accelerated to 15km/hr. Almost had a head on collision. I barely got 200m out of the house. I parked to the side and was wondering wtf was going on. I didn't expect the stock tires to be THIS bad. I had an intense exam week and was going to install winters after exams. But I regretted waiting that long at that point! Anyway, when I tried moving forward again, my car swerved so bad on the 15km/hr point that I was headed onto the other side of the road where traffic was coming from the other way. I quickly did a 360 and just went with the turn to make a complete u-turn and drove home at around 10km/hr with emergency lights on! Just got my winter tires installed an hour ago! And feeling much more confident about driving in the snow now. You can sit and complain about missing your old cars all you want. But if you don't dish out the extra bucks on winter tires, you're risk-rating for damaging your car in upcoming snow conditions is severely high! Not worth imo. You stand to lose a lot more if you don't install winters. |
