The answer with a standard transmission is ALWAYS put the clutch in.

Wow, whoever taught some of you to drive stick needs to be banned from ever teaching again. But I'm glad we're getting these lessons on the forum rather than destroying cars.

Here's a good rule for anything that is out of the ordinary: push the clutch pedal in...and fast. If you hear a weird sound: push the clutch in. If you smell something funky: push the clutch in. Just about anything that seems odd while the car is driving, may or may not be caused by the engine being connected to the wheels, but at the very least it will allow you to better identify what is going on and what the cause is.

I think selecting the wrong gear usually happens when we do it in a bend with some G forces acting on us. Especially a long sweeper where you want to change up or down, the load on you makes the gate feel different.
Easily done.

Go back to page 2, watch the video I posted. The car in the video has a fuel cutoff at 8200 I believe(he's shifting at 8k, angle makes it looks higher), but he hits over 10k when he goes back into 2nd from 3rd redline, instead of shifting into 4th.

See the red area of the tach? That whole section is 7800-9000rpm, the needle swings waaaaay past it.
