That should have been a money shot and something would be rattling around. I think you got lucky. I believe their is a lockout for first gear for a certain speed. Surprised you were able to put it in gear.

a tip for those who are new to manual, don't think of 3rd as slightly over and forward. because the springs will pull the stick to neutral, 3rd is always just straight forward. going from 2nd, push forward without any side motion, the stick will fall into neutral from 2nd and your hand will push it directly into 3rd.

same with 4th, but backwards and this works for upshifting and down shifting. now your body doesnt have to think if its all the way over for 1st or just a little bit over for 3rd, you just think 1st is left-up, 2nd is left-down, 3rd is straight forward, 4th is straight back, 5th is right up, and 6th right down.

I've been driving manual for 10 years now, and I had never consciously realized this, crazy!

I think you're ok. Isn't 40 mph in 1st < 8000 rpm? Visconti's tune pushes redline to 7800 rpm and no issues with that. To be safe though, listen for strange noises coming from the valvetrain.

Gear indicator useless on FRS, It doesn`t show which gear you are in till you pop the clutch. Wish it detected gear as soon as you throw it in gear like reverse gear.

If it was very brief, then nothing. If it was for a while (or often) then there might be some bent valves.

If you're really worried have a compression test done just to be sure.

I did it in my S2000 a long time ago. From 3rd back to second. It sounded like it hit 10k rpm. Freaked me out.

But everything checked out, I made sure from then on to get in the habit of shifting down and away (into 4th) from then on.

I turn my shifting palm away from me with my thumb facing down and my pinky up in the air, and shift into 4th that way; it kinda prevents you from going straight down or over into 2nd. That's the only gear I do it for.

I'm not sure if I went 40 it could be a little under. I'm thinking 35-40. if I don't notice any strange sounds, does that mean I'm okay?

Sounds like you luckily avoided a money shot. Careful thats a surefire way to break any car.

The car will go into any gear at any speed. You just need to try hard enough

Oh it will..

that should be just about 8,125-8,200RPM though, there are guys running these to 8,000 and IIRC some to 8,500 on stock valvetrain. My guess with the limited testing thus far, this car is perfectly fine.
