Depends on the location and income level. I have friends who got brand new Audi's for their 16th birthday(California boarding school) and friends who got a Toyota Tercel that their dad originally bought for scrap but then decided to give to his son(rural missouri)... I guess I'm somewhere in between...Although I can say that I got more emotional over getting this car than I've gotten over getting into my top couple colleges... This was me halfway through my drive home from the dealer: (crying with joy).

Cavey wasn't too bad because it was big and loose. Some of the others could be bears (literally and figuratively).

The good thing is you spent 45 minutes in costume and 90 minutes out when the temp was below 95, and 30 in 60 out when about 90. You got paid for the entire time, so I spent a lot of time playing cards with the other characters.

An hour? My goodness! I guess over here you commute an hour to go 20 miles on a good day. At this point in my life I have no desire to subject myself to anything more than a 20 minute commute, but beggars can't be choosers.

<--- commuted at least an hour each way for an unpaid internship in 11th grade working in a machine shop for a navy research lab in a sweet hand-me-down 97 camry. It led to a paid internship doing more science-y stuff the following 2 years at the same place. Those lines in the resume helped out big time in many ways over the years. It wasn't as much fun as what my friends were doing, but it was interesting and set me up well for the future.

I had other jobs before that to make a little money and those are good to build work ethic and responsibility but at a certain point it's really helpful to have something that you can take to a future employer and say "here...i learned something and challenged myself."

Haha it's an hour at 80 mph...My mom drove it for 5 years every day before finally giving up and moving her office home...If I have the opportunity to I will take an internship but at the same time I'd really like to build up some money before going off to college. I'd really like to work somewhere I could learn fabrication skills and welding and more "applied" engineering. I'm taking A.P. physics currently (counts for first year of college physics) and although it's great I really want to learn how to do some more basic metalworking skills so that I can actually use what I've learned. I'm learning how to weld no matter what this summer, but learning more about using presses,drills and maybe some more advanced tools (CAD machines and 3d printers make me giddy) would give me a leg up going into engineering classes in college.

If you can get some time at a machine shop you'll be very happy. I was a 16 year old kid building things in CAD and running CNC machines...and it did give me a big advantage later. Welding is fun as shit too.

I wouldn't worry too much about making money but that's my opinion. It sounds like you have a nice little safety net (no disrespect meant there) so if you find an opportunity for something like that it might be worth it to jump on it. Or, get another easy job in addition for some pocket change.

You have a good attitude regarding your priviledges. I had several friends in HS that had brand new expensive cars paid for their folks and they were also lazy and lousy students. Their "safety nets" were huge and none of them went off to university as I did. They spent their considerable allowances on weed and probably heavier stuff later on. I guess I was their poor mooch friend that had a few common interests.
Funny after I did go on to higher education, not one of them remained friendly with me, and probably better that way as I had enough on my plate. I was the decent student that hung out with "that crowd".

This is basically me...My parents basically hate my friends from my old school...and those friends have their own issues now so I'm hoping to branch out and find some other guys to hang out with

This is actually a double edged sword...my "safety net" doesn't want to pay for upgrades for "my" car...But at least they're willing to pay for my college. I'll take that tradeoff any day, but hey, nothing wrong with having money I earned with my own work And I'm learning how to weld partly to build a full cage on a pre-runner Ford Ranger my stepdad and I have been building...it currently has no roof and a roll bar but nothing else...

Parents paying for college > parents paying for stupid rice burner shit you do with your car. There's no double-edged sword; that's your entitlement talking. I thank God and my parents for sending me to college every day. I thank my job for grossly overpaying me so I can waste money on frivolous purchases for my BRZ.

I come from a similar background, friend. No problem with your situation, just your attitude. It was tongue in cheek, but I can see I offended your sense of entitlement.

That it's not your car, that you didn't earn it, and you will do everything in your power to be successful and educated so that you one day may show your children the same lifestyle.
